A Message from the Head of School

Dear Frederica Academy Community,

We are blessed to have committed faculty and staff who are constantly seeking advice on best practices for a safe and inclusive educational environment. We have crisis plans (e.g. fire drills, tornado drills, etc.) for possible interruptions on our campus that are practiced by all of our community each month. In April, we will conduct our "intruder on campus" lockdown drill. To avoid any possible worries your child or you might have when we run this drill, we will notify you in advance.

A few days ago we invited the Glynn County Police officials responsible for our part of the island to visit our campus to familiarize themselves with our community and crisis plan procedures.  Bob Egger, our lead Security officer; Chris Dalton, our Director of Facilities; and Mike Temple, our Upper School Director, toured the campus and buildings seeking insight on how best to ensure the safety of everyone on our campus in the event of a situation.

This partnership with local public safety officials and first responders will enhance our commitment to creating a safe and secure environment that is essential for the education for all who spend their days at Frederica Academy. The officers assigned to our part of the island will be consistent and, therefore, will be more of a presence during our school year. We welcome and appreciate their willingness to help us consistently improve on crisis plans and communication.

As the group walked around our beautiful campus, Lt. Ricky Evans asked important questions about campus access and sign-in procedures so that he could understand our unique place on the island.  We seek to be warm and inviting, but there is collective agreement we need to secure parts of our campus that have traditionally been used by island residents.

Accordingly, we must close the access points to our campus by sidewalks near Georgia Power and Sea Island Road across from the first entrance to Epworth. We realize these sidewalks have been used by some of our students; however, there are still sidewalks on Demere Road and Sea Island Road leading to the front entrance of the school.  While biking and walking to school from close neighborhoods is a plus for many, we must advise pedestrians and cyclists who cross Sea Island Road to use extreme caution as there is no crosswalk at this point and the travel across the road is very dangerous.

We recommend all students travel to school by the safest means possible. Frederica Academy understandably assumes no liability or responsibility for injuries, damages or claims incurred by anyone crossing Sea Island Road or Demere Road on foot or bicycle. We hope in the future that Glynn County will install a crosswalk at the first entrance to Epworth but until then we must do all we can to notify and protect our students from potential danger. For example, we ask all drivers to pay special attention to student pedestrians or cyclists as they are entering or leaving the front gate.

Again, we thank the Glynn County Police Department's Island Division for their commitment to our school, community and campus safety.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,

Head of School

Athletic PPE Forms (
APRIL 11)
Screenings (APRIL 25)

All 6th through 12th grade students need to have a Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (PPE) for each new school year. This is required due to the rigorous activity expected by our physical education, athletic, and field trip programs.

As a school service, t he FA Athletic Department and Southeast Georgia Health System conduct on-campus PPE's for current students in grades 5 through 11 during the month of April each year.  Once complete, each student will be covered to participate in school and sports for the entire upcoming school year. We are very fortunate to have community volunteers provide this service for a $10 donation to the Booster Club.

The PPE's for the 2018-2019 school year will be held in the gym on April 25, 2018, from 5-7 p.m.

If you would like your student to have the exam done at school, please click HERE to print the packet of forms.  Parents should complete  pages 1-5 and return the entire seven-page packet to school no later than April 11, 2018. Please turn in complete paperwork to Coach Zimmermann or to Nurse Byers. The $10 fee will be added to the student's account as the paperwork is submitted. Turning in forms by April 11 allows us to do pre-screening (Height and weight, vision screenings, etc.) before the PPE event.

If you prefer to have the exam done by your family physician, please click HERE for a form packet. Parents should complete pages 1-5. Take the entire seven-page packet to your doctor and return to school when the exam is complete.

FA Odyssey of the Mind Teams Advance to State Finals

On Saturday, Frederica Academy had three Sixth Grade teams participate in the South Georgia Regional Odyssey of the Mind competition in Hawkinsville, Georgia. These teams have been working very hard over the past several months to create solutions to their chosen problems. They have worked together to problem solve; choreograph dances; and create scenery, props, costumes, and skits.

We are incredibly proud of all of the participating students for their wonderful work yesterday. The group had a lot of fun and a great time at Frederica Academy's first-ever Odyssey of the Mind competition.

All of the teams did an extraordinary job and two of the teams placed second in their respective divisions and have advanced to the Georgia Odyssey of the Mind State Finals which will take place at Columbus State University on April 7.

Well done, FA Odyssey of the Mind Knights!

Eighth Grade Literature (Romeo + Juliet)

What a month our 8th graders have had in English! While many were reluctant to read Shakespeare, we are ending our unit on Romeo and Juliet with a new-found love of his stories and language. Over the last month, our 8th graders immersed themselves in Shakespeare Verona, Italy, as we read Romeo and Juliet, and they have loved (most) every minute of it! As the unit began, we divided into "families" that represented the Capulets and the Montagues.  As we read the play, students competed as a family in games and contests and decorated their "houses" with quotes, pictures, and words that they connected to the play.  We discussed motivations, argued with the characters' logic and decisions, and questioned why the tragedy happened. We relished in the bittersweet end of the feud and understood the gravity of the consequences for each character's actions in the play. Our unit culminates with a written analysis of the play as well as a pizza party to celebrate the peace and harmony that now exists between the families.

Fourth Grade Field Trip to SSI Lighthouse

Fourth Grade had a delightful day at the St Simons Lighthouse Museum learning about the history of the lighthouse and as well as Saint Simons Island. The 129-step-climb to the top of the lighthouse is always as invigorating as it is exhausting. The weather held out for us, so we enjoyed a picnic, and a game of telephone, in the gazebo by the ocean. Many thanks to our parent chaperones and drivers who made the trip possible.

Kindergarten Special Guest Readers

Kindergarten was doubly blessed this past Thursday by having TWO special guest readers!

Wyatt Whitlow, Wylder's brother, came to share Eric Carle's Hello, Red Fox.  In this colorful tale, the audience is asked to focus on one picture for ten seconds and then to look at a blank page for the image to reappear in complementary colors. It was a unique experience for the class!  We appreciated it so much that we kept it in the classroom to retry the visual experiments!

Mrs. Jane Buckley, Garrett's grandmother, brought in another fun book. It was titled H is for Home Run: A Baseball Alphabet by Brad Herzog. This story goes through the alphabet explaining different components of the game of baseball, related trivia, or historical facts. Mrs. Buckley elaborated on each letter to further explain the meaning of words such as grand slam or Wrigley Field. Being that it is t-ball and baseball season at the moment, this book was literally a huge hit!

Pre-K Mystery Reader - Laura Brown

Joe Brown's mother, Laura Brown, was the Mystery Reader in Pre-K this week.  She read My Garden by Kevin Henkes.
