Important Message for the Class of 2018

The Baseball, Girls Soccer, and Boys Soccer teams won their playoff games this weekend and have advanced to the GISA AAA State Semi-Finals. GISA requires all Semi-Final Games to be played on Friday, May 18. The soccer games will be played at Mercer University and the baseball series will be played at home with one game on Friday and one or two games on Saturday.

These developments have created a scheduling challenge with respect to our Baccalaureate and Graduation events since more than half of our graduating seniors play on one of these teams.

We are exploring the possibility of moving the Baccalaureate ceremony and dinner to Thursday night so that all of our seniors can attend. We will finalize arrangements on Monday and will communicate plans as early as possible.

We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding regarding our desire to include all of our seniors in their graduation events and traditions.

Rising Seventh Grade Immunizations (Action Required)

Georgia state law stipulates that seventh graders are issued a new immunization certificate (GA form 3231) before the first day of school. This review ensures that each seventh grader has all the required school immunizations, including tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and meningococcal vaccines.

Please call your pediatrician or the Health Department soon.  They will determine what vaccines are required, make an appointment if needed, and issue a new form 3231. This should be done before August 15, 2018.

Please click HERE to email Nurse Byers should you have questions.

PPE Screenings Grades 5-11 (Action Required)

All new and returning students in Grade 5-11 must have an annual pre-participation physical evaluation (PPE) screening.  The PPE screening can be performed  by your family physician or at an immediate or urgent care center.  There is no need to wait for a physician appointment, as most immediate care centers will provide the exam.  The FA form packet must be used to document the completed exam. Please click HERE for forms.  The parent completes and signs pages 1 through 5, including page 5 and the medical professional completes and signs pages 6 and 7.  Upon completion, please return to school to the attention of the school nurse, no later than May 30.  Please understand that your student will not be allowed to attend Carpe Vitam, any athletic practice, camp, scrimmage, game, or other physical activity, etc. without a 2018-2019 PPE on file with the school nurse. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Upper School Spanish Awards

Congratulations to several FA Spanish students who earned national recognition for excellent performance on the 2018 National Spanish Examinations.

Students from Frederica Academy earned a total of seven Gold, twelve Silver and eleven Bronze Medals along with 21 Honorable Mentions. "Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious," said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, "because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 150,000 students participating in 2018." Students from Frederica Academy have a long history of high achievement on these exams.

FA Ambassador Appreciation Luncheon

Constance Sullivan approached school administrators with an idea her freshman year. She suggested creating an Ambassador program comprised of students who would work with the Admission Office to help host guests when they visited our campus. The idea grew into a more expanded program which now involves student ambassadors who help with a variety of hospitality and internal service leadership initiatives.

On Friday, Constance hosted a luncheon, catered by Barberitos, to thank this year's Ambassadors and to honor Mrs. Julie Ackerman for serving as the group's advisor since its inception.

Next year, Britton Sullivan will be the new Ambassador student leader and Helen Rentz will be the new advisor.

Lower School Student Spotlight:  Mary Ford Fitzjurls

Interview with Mary Ford Fitzjurls
Friday, May 11, 2018

Helen Rentz recently had the opportunity to sit and speak with Frederica Academy student Mary Ford Fitzjurls about her new venture on Instagram reviewing books for Middle grade readers. Just a fourth grader herself, Mary Ford has been reading books for as long as she remembers. With a hunger for reading and a love of sharing her passion with friends, Mary Ford began her blog earlier this year with the help of her mom, Misty Leigh Williams. While Mary Ford assumes the book worm role, her mom assists with the technical aspects of managing a social media account. When deciding on books to review, Mary Ford likes to tie it in to what's going on in her world, like recommending A Wrinkle in Time before the movie came out, or an ocean book for Earth Day, she even read and reviewed Paperboy when author Vince Vawter visited FA.

Read along to learn more about Mary Ford's new project and favorite pastime!  Click HERE to check out her blog.

Mrs. Rentz: Good morning, Mary Ford.  Tell our readers about your Instagram account.

Mary Ford: It's called @seemaryread. For each post, I include a picture of me reading the book, a review, a really good quote for the book, and then a picture of me as a baby reading a baby book.

Mrs. Rentz: Where did you get the idea to start a book review blog on Instagram?

Mary Ford: Well, my friend's parents are always asking about good books that I've read. So, my mom said why don't you start a blog about all of the books that you've read. It's an easy way to share with everyone great books to read.

Mrs. Rentz: What is your favorite book you have reviewed?

Mary Ford:
I have a couple. The first one is Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty, and the second one is The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. These are both mysteries. I really like mysteries.

Third Grade Poetry Presentations

Third Graders learned all about poetry in reading class. They worked hard to write different kinds of poems, and then they compiled them into a poetry book. To celebrate their wonderful writing, they had a poetry reading in the library. They enjoyed lemonade and cheese and crackers while each child shared his or her poem with the class. It was a special morning!

Click HERE to see more photos.

Second Grade Literature Circles

Second Graders are doing a fantastic job participating in Literature Circles during their reading time. Literature Circles are small groups of students who meet to discuss a piece of literature. Each member of the circle is assigned a role which helps guide the discussion. Literature Circles allow students to become critical thinkers as they read, share thoughts, ask questions, and respond to reading selections. The key to successful Literature Circles is collaboration, and our Second Grader students are doing a fabulous job in that regard.

Second Grade Beach Habitat Field Trip

Second graders spent the day at the beach with Miss Brooke and Miss Aimee from Coastal Outdoor Adventures. The children created beach habitats in the sand and then filled them with creatures they gathered by sifting, casting and seining. It was a great way to learn about the area that we call home!
