A Message from Miss Fleming

Dear Frederica Family,

We certainly had an excellent opening week of school upon which I can really brag since I had very little to do with it. I'm especially thankful for:
  • You ... for trusting us with your children;
  • A Leadership Team that works tirelessly;
  • Committed, competent, joyful teachers who know your children and continue to learn, too;
  • A Board that strives to support us in every way quietly, tirelessly, and professionally;
  • Schedules that overcome numerous complexities and students who take it all in stride;
  • Staff that keep our campus beautiful and not only respond to every need but often anticipate it;
  • The blessings known and unknown we receive each day;
  • A wonderful Parent Association for hosting a spectacular Back-to-School Barbeque on Tuesday night;
  • An energetic Booster Club that provided a great Tailgate party on Friday night which one Upper School student told me, "Be sure to get those chicken fingers. They are the best I've ever had!" She was correct; AND
  • The blessings known and unknown we receive each day;
My cousins from Richmond, Virginia, were here all last week. They come every year and stay at my sister's vacation home. While I was able to see very little of them, two came to the football game. They were absolutely enchanted by the family environment as all ages from grandparents to pre-schoolers were all mixing with care. They also commented on the nice manners and ease utilized when meeting them and speaking to me. I was grateful they pointed this out because I can take some things that are part of our civil culture for granted. We must continue to cultivate this civility in a literate world.

"The whole world is a series of miracles, but we're so used to them we call them ordinary things."

Best wishes to you and your family as you celebrate the Solar Eclipse on Monday. I look forward to seeing all of our Lower School parents on Tuesday night at the Parent Open House and all of our students and our other parents as we begin a very active first full week of school.

See you soon,

Ellen Fleming

Lower School Good News Club Volunteer Training

Frederica Academy is launching a new program for Lower School students (Grades 1-5) this year. The Good News Club is an after-school Bible club that will launch on Wednesday, September 27. It will be offered weekly on Wednesday afternoons between 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Participation is voluntary and does not require a fee. The program is being underwritten by a group of anonymous donors who gave gifts in honor of Ed Ralston who passed away earlier this summer. Mr. Ralston served for many years as a member of the FA Board of Trustees and chaired our Board of Visitors between 2012 and 2015.

Parents, Grandparents, Upper School students in Grades 11 and 12, and other members of the FA family who are interested in serving as Good News Club volunteers should click HERE to contact Aimee Brown for more information. Prospective volunteers should make plans to attend a volunteer training session on Saturday, September 16. All volunteers must participate in a training session in order to be eligible to be involved with the Good News Club program. Click HERE to register for the September 16 training session.

Solar Eclipse Problem-Based Learning Lesson

On Thursday, 4th grade students learned about the eclipse with a problem-based learning lesson. Teachers divided the students into groups and gave each group a tennis ball, a ping pong ball and a flashlight. They told them that one represented the moon, one the sun, and the other the earth. Their job was to create an eclipse.  With the lights off and blinds down, the students had fun determining the role of each ball and creating partial eclipses moving the moon (ping pong ball) between the sun and the earth. They discussed the relative sizes of each body and answered questions like, "will the whole world would be dark during an eclipse?"   Fun, hands-on learning!

Kindergarten Solar Eclipse Celebration

Kindergarten will celebrate the solar eclipse through reading books, making special crafts, and creating a snack to look like the eclipse!  They are eager to learn about this special event through crafts, snacks, and fun!
