Jennifer A. Nielsen Author Visit:  WEDNESDAY

Middle School students are excited to meet author Jennifer A. Nielsen on Wednesday, September 19th.  After reading her novel, A Night Divided, this summer, students have spent time in most classes and advisory talking about walls and the boundaries that separate us from one another. From discussions about the Cold War and government with Mrs. Dillon and metaphorical walls that separate us with Mrs. Walbridge, to socialism vs. capitalism with Mr. Lenon and connections to The Outsiders with Mr. Connolly, to the density of the wall with Mr. Titter and immigration in our country with Ms. Hill, Middle School students have been busy!  Students are eager to hear from Ms. Nielsen when she visits this week.

Please join us in welcoming Ms. Nielsen to our campus. We invite you to sit in on the discussion in the Terry Thomas Room (Arts Center) during one of the following sessions on Wednesday:

10:00 AM - 10:30 AM Middle School Assembly (Grades 6-8)

10:45 AM - 11:25 AM Q&A (Grades 6 + 8)

11:35 AM - 12:15 PM Q&A (Grade 7)

Please click  HERE  to email Mrs. Walbridge with any questions.

Fathers, Faith & Frederica:  FRIDAY

Fathers, Faith & Frederica (FF&F) is a group that shares the following three characteristics: we are fathers of current or past Frederica students; men of faith; and men who have a deep attachment to Frederica Academy.

We are in the middle of a nine-week study on leadership.  Last week's topic:  Group - a Voluntary combination of two or more People.
This week's topic:  LDP - The process employed by a group to develop new leaders.

FF&F meets in the athletic conference room opposite Hamilton Hall from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. (8:15 program start time) every Friday that the kids are in school. There is no need to rsvp, just drop in.

Also, we have coffee, talk about college football and campus parking.

Jacksonville Exploring College Options:  SEPTEMBER 27

Thursday
September 27, 2018
7:00 PM

Jacksonville Marriott
Jacksonville, Florida

Exploring College Options is a unique program featuring five of the country's leading universities: Duke University, Georgetown University, Harvard College, Stanford University, and the University of Pennsylvania.  Representatives from the five schools will offer brief slide presentations about their institutions and answer questions about the sometimes-mystifying world of college admissions. Participants will learn about what distinguishes one fine university from another, what competitive colleges look for in the selection process, and what students can do to enhance their college applications.

Upper School Hurricane Cross Artwork

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Nurse Byers and I took a group of FA students to help clean up New Orleans during our spring break the following year.

While there, I bought a clay hurricane cross. The note with the cross read:

"The coast is a place where some visitors aren't welcome. They all have names and are totally unpredictable with winds that blow in a counter clockwise direction. The dreaded hurricane is one guest we all hope won't find us. Should you be confronted with nature's disaster...look to your cross for comfort until the new day is upon us."

On Friday, FA art students made small hurricane crosses or the Star of David in recognition of our gratitude for being able to be at school on a day when thousands of students were out of school as their families were displaced from their homes and communities.

Eighth Grade Civics Infomercials

Eighth Grade Civics students performed infomercials about early colonial settlements in North America last Monday. Representing 17th century colonists from Jamestown, Quebec, St. Augustine, and New Amsterdam, students researched, wrote, and performed short commercials lauding the benefits of moving to the new colonies. They had an opportunity to interpret differences between the English, Spanish, French, and Dutch motives for claiming land in the New World while practicing collaborative group work and public speaking skills.

Click HERE to watch a sample infomercial.

Third Grade World Map Study

Third Grade students began their year-long geography social studies unit with the focus on the continents and oceans of the world. They used student-made maps and pointed with "funny fingers" to help learn about our world. Students changed partners many times and had a great experience learning about world geography.

Third Grade Rosh Hashanah Celebration

Third Graders also learned about Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and celebrated by eating traditional apples and honey to represent a fruitful and sweet new year.

Second Grade Star Students:  Chloe Barker + Eli Brock

Chloe Barker and Eli Brock were Star Students in Second Grade last week. They did a fabulous job interviewing each other so that their classmates could learn more about them. Chloe and Eli also invited a guest reader to their classroom during the week!

Second Grade Elements of Art Lesson

Our Second Grade artists are learning about Elements of Art. Their element last week was SHAPE. Each student collected leaves and created animals in their habitats as they learned about various shapes found in nature.

Second Grade Continent Research Project

Second Grade is studying the continents in social studies. Last week, they learned the beginning steps to researching and note-taking using one of the school's online subscription databases. The students worked in pairs to research an assigned continent. They used a graphic organizer to record facts onto paper. They also learned the importance of using trustworthy sources, how to take notes using their own words, and citing their sources.

Click HERE to see more photos.

Second Grade Science Chest Vests

Second Grade scientists had a great time making "chest vests" in science class last week.

Pre-Kindergarten Mystery Reader

Friday's Pre-Kindergarten Mystery Reader was a family affair. George Dunn's mother, Valerie Dunn; his grandmother, Ellen Dunn; and his cousin, Patrick Dunn (Class of 2026), collaborated to read Amazing World of Sharks. The Pre-K students especially enjoyed  learning about the collection of shark teeth the Dunn family brought with them.
