A Message from The Arts Center

Dear Frederica Academy Community,

Hello! My name is Christopher Smith, and I am the new Director of Fine Arts at Frederica Academy. I am so excited about our wonderful students and the many goals we have set for our Music Program this year.

Click HERE to see more photos taken during the GIYO StringsOn! Program.

Our friends from the Golden Isles Youth Orchestra (GIYO) came to Frederica Academy for the StringsOn! Program this past week. They worked with our Fourth and Fifth Grade students and introduced them to the joy of playing the violin.  On the last day, some even played the Cello and Double Bass. They were so excited! And so were we. We are thrilled to have GIYO involved on our campus. We are currently in discussions with GIYO representatives regarding a more expansive, year-round Strings program for our Lower School with hopes to expand it to the Middle School next year.

We have quite an impressive Fine Arts Facility with plenty of room to grow. I have shared a vision with our Administration that will take three years for us to accomplish. With a little hard work, we can certainly do it. Imagine if you will, a full Symphonic Band Program with strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion. Out of this full band, we can create a Jazz Band, string quartets, and many performance options. We have already brought the instruments out for our 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders, and they are excelling in their music. They are already reading music, and making almost the right notes on their horns. Sometimes it is very challenging, but we are having so much fun!

I truly believe that we can all work together to bring to the Golden Isles the sound of music from our students at Frederica Academy. It will take a little time, but our amazing students can be the best.  Please click HERE to email me should you want to get together to talk about a shared vision for our music program or if you have instruments you would like to donate to the school.  We are in the process of creating a wish-list of items we need and would certainly welcome financial or in-kind donations to help us continue to grow our music program.

Finally, I am so honored to be a part of your child's life. It is a joy to watch our students discover music and focus on music reading. We have a wonderful adventure ahead of us all. I do look forward to meeting you soon.

Always,

Director of Fine Arts

Monday Head of School Listening Sessions

Dear Parents, Faculty, and Staff,

For those of you who were not able to attend one of the Head of School Search Committee Listening Sessions held last Thursday, we urge you to attend a session on Monday afternoon. There is a faculty/staff session (4:00 p.m.) and a parent session (5:30 p.m.).

The dialogue on Thursday was so valuable to inform the Search Committee about what is really important for our school, and we would like to hear from more voices. Gaining an understanding of what you believe are the desirable characteristics of our school and community will help us "sell" Frederica to prospective candidates. We also want to hear what desirable characteristics you think we should be looking for in our next Head of School. Your input is critical to our success in the search; therefore, we ask you to take the time to participate and share your opinions.

We look forward to seeing you at one of the following sessions on Monday:

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Faculty + Staff Terry Thomas Room (Arts Center - Second Floor)

5:30 PM - 6:30 PM Parents Terry Thomas Room (Arts Center - Second Floor)

We are extraordinarily grateful to Dr. Valerie Hepburn for facilitating each session.

If you are not able to attend, you are welcome to provide input via email. Please click HERE to send us your comments.

Thank you for your support and thank you for being a part of our Frederica community.

Sandi Channell, Frederica Academy Board Chair
Greer Brown, Frederica Academy Board Vice Chair and Head of School Search Committee Chair

We will host a Carpe Vitam Parent Information Night on Thursday, September 28, 2017, at 6:00 p.m.  The following class trip representatives will provide program information (including permission forms) and will answer questions you may have regarding each experience.  Please see below for guidance as to where your grade meeting will be located.

To offset some of the school days lost to Hurricane Irma, we've made the following adjustments to the 2017-2018 Master Calendar. Click HERE to access and download the REVISED 2017-2018 Master Calendar.
  • Monday, October 9 - School will be in session on Columbus Day.
  • Wednesday, December 20 - School will be in session on Wednesday, December 20. It will be a half day for all divisions. Lower School will adjourn following the traditional Giving Tree program. It will be the last day of exams for Middle School and Upper School students. Friday, December 15, will be the last exam review day and exams will take place on December 18, 19, and 20. Thursday, December 21, will be a Teacher Work Day.
  • Wednesday, January 3 - The Second Semester will start on Wednesday, January 3, instead of Thursday, January 4. All students and teachers will return on January 3.
  • Friday, February 16 - School will be in session on Friday, February 16. We will observe Presidents' Day as a school holiday on Monday, February 19.

We've made some additional calendar adjustments to optimize classroom learning and student assessments. For example:

  • Thursday, October 19 - We will offer evening sign-ups for Middle School and Upper School parents as an alternative option to parent-teacher conferences taking place on Friday, October 20.
  • Friday, October 20 - Lower School and Middle School students will not attend school on Friday, October 20, in order for teachers to participate in parent-teacher conferences. Upper School students will be in session until noon on Friday, October 20. Students in Grades 9-11 will take the Pre-ACT and students in Grade 12 will attend the Senior Health Seminar.
