ALTHOUGH FALL HAS YET TO OFFICIALLY BEGIN, the fall migration of songbirds certainly has! This past week has seen a few nice flocks of neotropical migrants passing through WNC including good numbers of Blackburnian, Black-throated Green, Chestnut-sided, Canada, Hooded, Prairie, & Black-and-white Warblers, plus Redstart and Northern Waterthrush, just to name a few. Guide Aaron Steed even had a Cerulean in his yard, so keep your eyes open for the next 2 months - you never know what you might find just outside your door!

As usual, our busy fall calendar of day trips has been assembled to offer the very best of fall birding in WNC, which you can peruse below. We hope you will join us on a trip this fall!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
FALL WARBLER WORKSHOP 1 | Sept 6
We will examine the many aspects of bird migration at Jackson Park in Hendersonville, NC, one of the most remarkable migrant traps in all of the southeast. We'll explore the easy trails here, focusing on the ID of fall warblers.

SPECTACULAR FALL MIGRATION 1 | Sept 13
Bring a comfy chair and a blanket, sit back, and watch as colorful migrant birds stream across the Blue Ridge Parkway at Ridge Junction, a fantastic migrant 'funnel.' Some mornings can be spectacular - last year we got great looks at a Kirtland's Warbler!
-------------------------------------------------------
THE ORCHARD AT ALTAPASS | Sept 15
A scenic day birding at the Historic Orchard at Altapass on the Blue Ridge Parkway, where we should find a nice selection of warblers and other migrants.
-------------------------------------------------------
BIG BALD BANDING STATION I | Sept 17
Visit Big Bald Banding Station, located on the Appalachian Trail, for an educational insight into the importance of migratory bird research. Weather depending, visitors will have the option to participate in the migratory hawkwatch and witness banding activities of numerous migratory songbirds.
-------------------------------------------------------
FALL WARBLER WORKSHOP II | Sept 20
Experience the peak of songbird migration at Jackson Park in Hendersonville. This trip is identical to the first but held 2 weeks later, which should yield a different selection of migrants.
-------------------------------------------------------
GREEN RIVER GAME LANDS | Sept 23
Our first ever fall trip to the game lands is timed during the peak of songbird migration, so we should see plenty of birds passing through! We'll spend extra time on the Walcott Tract of the game lands and will perhaps make it to Big Hungry as well.
-------------------------------------------------------
FRENCH BROAD RIVER GREENWAY | Sept 26
A laid-back morning exploring French Broad River Park and the adjacent greenway at Carrier Park for a selection of migrants. You never know what you might find at this underbirded location.
-------------------------------------------------------
CADES COVE, SMOKY MTNS NAT. PARK | Sept 27
Join our newest guide for this brand new day trip to Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains Nat. Park. Of course warblers and other migrants will be our quarry, and there should be plenty of birds around! 119 species have been recorded here in Sept!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPECTACULAR FALL MIGRATION 2 | Sept 29
The 2nd of our fall visits to this excellent spot.
--------------------------------------------------------------
FALL WARBLER WORKSHOP 3
Oct 1
w/  Kevin Burke
The 3rd and final warbler workshop at Jackson Park. These trips have been evenly spaced out to catch a different assortment of migrants during the fall. The selection of birds on this trip could be quite different than those found on the previous 2 trips - so why not sign up for more than one?

FALL MIGRATION IN SEVIER COUNTY, TN
Oct 3
w/ Keith Watson
A day spent in the higher reaches of the Great Smoky Mtns Nat. Park looking for high-elevation birds plus fall migrants. Join our newest guide to this beautiful area where there should be no shortage of birds!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SEVEN ISLANDS STATE BIRDING PARK, TN
Oct 5
w/ Keith Watson
Visit this excellent TN state park that was created specifically with birding in mind! This will be our first trip to this park, but of course at this time of year we should still expect to see a good selection of southbound migrants.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
BIG BALD BANDING STATION 2
Oct 8
Our 2nd visit to this scenic spot will take place a bit after the typical peak of songbird migration, but there should still be a steady stream of birds passing through. Nashville, Bay-breasted, and even Connecticut Warblers have been banded here at this time of year!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
MORGANTON GREENWAY
Oct 15
An easy and relaxing day walking along the paved paths at this migration corridor along the Catawba River. Fall migration always carries a bit of excitement, as you really never know what you may stumble upon!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPARROW WORKSHOP 1
Oct 22
w/  Aaron Steed
Having trouble distinguishing all those 'streaky, brown birds?' Don't be discouraged - this is the trip for you! We'll visit Warren Wilson College and nearby Owen Park looking for newly arrived wintering sparrows such as White-throated, White-crowned, Savannah, and Swamp Sparrows and more. Vesper & Lincoln's are possible and Henslow's and American Tree Sparrows have been seen here this time of year!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
FALL @ GROVE STONE QUARRY
Oct 29
It has been a few years since we've taken a group to this interesting spot, and we are looking forward to returning! We'll explore the areas around the ponds looking for sparrows & late migrants, and we may even see the first southbound ducks on the ponds. With a butterfly garden, a nature trail, and an overlook, this place has great potential!
