President's Message 
We enjoyed celebrating the holidays with our friends and and members on December 11 at the Joint Holiday Mixer & Toy Drive! Thank you to those of you who generously donated toys. A special thanks to co-hosting organizations Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego, California Bar Foundation, Lawyers Club of San Diego, Korean American Bar Association, Tom Homann Law Association, South Asian Bar Association and San Diego Chinese Attorneys Association. The legal community in San Diego is truly more united than ever. We appreciate the support from fellow bar associations and look forward to many future collaborations in the upcoming year.

FALSD IN THE COMMUNITY
FALSD board members Valerie, Ariel and Rommel at the Joint Holiday Mixer & Toy Drive on December 11, 2015. 
All toys collected at the Holiday Mixer & Toy Drive were donated to Friends of Scott Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports children with cancer and their families.  
Members of the FALSD Board at the Joint Fil-Am Professional Mixer earlier this month. FALSD co-sponsored the event, which brought together ten Fil-Am community groups in Mira Miesa.

News From Philippine American Bar Association of Los Angeles (PABA-LA): Fil-Am Rob Villeza was sworn in on 12/11/14 as judge of the Los Angeles superior court. Judge Villeza served as an Assistant United States Attorney for more than 20 years and was appointed to the bench by Governor Jerry Brown. See PABA's Press Release

Attorney Volunteers Needed For SDCBA Diversity Fellowship Program
Attorney volunteers are needed to review student applications for the Diversity Fellowship Program (DFP). The DFP provides first-year law students with paid employment opportunities to provide valuable learning opportunities with the goal of increasing the number of diverse attorneys practicing in San Diego law firms. Volunteers are needed to review applications in February 2015 and to interview students at the SDCBA on Saturday, 2/28/15. The DFP also continues to seek employers interested in participating. Victim Advocate Training Seeks Volunteers
SAVE Legal Network of San Diego County is looking for 10 Filipino volunteers to support Filipina victims of domestic violence with translation and court accompaniment in family court or administrative hearings. Volunteers must attend one advocate training workshop, held at 2841 Highland Avenue, National City on the 2nd Monday of the month. San Diego County High School Mock Trial Competition Seeks Attorneys to Score 2015 Competition - Several Dates Available
Scorers sit in the jury box while the student teams present their case to a judge or commissioner. They are given a set of criteria for rating the teams numerically. The criteria include the quality of the students' presentations, their grasp of the law and court procedures, and their understanding of the case itself, NOT on the legal merit's of the team's case.  Time commitment is approximately two hours per trial. "Democracy & Cultural Expression: Confronting Modernization in the Philippines" - Jan. 28, 2015
The discussion will take place on Wed, 1/28/15 at 5 pm at Roth Auditorium, Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, 2880 Torrey Pines Scenic Drive, San Diego. Featuring Jose Dalisay, professor of English and creative writing at the University of the Philippines and award-winning author. Hosted by the Center on Emerging and Pacific Economies at the UCSD School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. 

Description: This Philippines seems ever on the verge of great political and economic transformation, but almost just as inevitably keeps getting held back by age-old realities and complexities.
