FAMSEG, the Family Law Section Email GroupApril 2014
Chair's Message

Elisha Roy

When I returned from the Spring Retreat in Las Vegas in early April, I took a look at some of the notes that I had written when beginning my term as President of the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar.  There were so many undercurrents during that time - "taking care of yourself so that you can take care of others", "learning to communicate with others so as to 'limit frustrations'", " learning how to unplug and let go as not get bogged down in the system"........so many things!

I decided to focus on "making yourself strong".  And that simple sentence means so many different things to different people.  It could mean learning; about parenting issues to effectively help clients.  It could mean taking an accounting class; to better understand business valuations for your clients.  It may mean learning a new way to take care of yourself; to learn how not to let stress get to you.  It could mean ridding yourself of things that do not serve a good purpose in your life.  It could mean anything.

Making yourself strong is equipping yourself with the skills you need to be the very best that you can be.  And that answer will be different for everyone.

I love that our organization is so diverse.  We have so many different people, with different backgrounds, different driving principals, different hierarchies of importance and priorities.  Yet together we accomplish amazing tasks for Florida families. I challenge you during this year to embrace the differences we have, befriend an executive council or section member you've never met before, or better yet, one you've met and are pretty sure you couldn't be in the same room with for 5 minutes... learn what connects you, as I guarantee you there will be a connection. I challenge you during this bar cycle to set a personal goal for yourself that will make you stronger, as a lawyer, as a person, you choose... start getting a massage once a month, learn a new skill, write an article, start Crossfit (couldn't leave that out). By making ourselves stronger we can make a strong organization, something I believe we need.

I hope that each of you will leave this year stronger in at least one facet of your life. On this, the Section's 40th Anniversary, I ask that we work together to make the Family Law Section a strong, unified organization of different people, with a common... strength for Florida's families.

Recently, I submitted a letter to the editor's of the Tallahassee Democrat, with my opinion on the Alimony reform issues.  I'm attaching a link to the article for your review!

Please check out the upcoming CLE's and keep checking for more upcoming events!

Sincerely,

Elisha
