Chair's Message

Greetings!

Elisha Roy

Hello and happy October.  I cannot believe how quickly time is flying by!

For this month my primary focus is on having as many people as possible involved in the Family Law Section... and not just by joining, but becoming an active participant.  There are so many valuable things to gain by becoming involved in the Section: mentors, referral basis (from and to), become and maintain up to the minute knowledge in the law, and long lasting friendships.

The best way to start that process is to come to a live meeting!   The Family Law Section and the AAML (Florida Chapter) present the "2014 Marital & Family Law Review Course" on January 31-February 1, 2014 at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando, Florida.  You can find links to both the brochure and event scheule in the section above.  The Family Law Section also has three (3) scholarships available to anyone who would like to attend the Certification Review Course. See the link below for more information.

Please mark your calendars for the SPRING Family Law Section conference in fabulous Las Vegas!  We are getting the final plans ready right now - and you will have them soon.  But mark your calendars now - the dates are March 26-29, 2014.   We will be staying at the fabulous Bellagio Resort and doing "Viva Las Vegas"!

Sincerely,

Elisha

Kirton v. McKissick, 38 Fla.L.Weekly D1799 (Fla. 5th DCA 2013).  Order extending domestic violence injunction extended even though no additional acts of violence occurred.  The appropriate analysis focuses on whether the Petitioner's professed continuing fear of future violence is reasonable under the circumstances.

"Making a Difference"
Award Receipient
October 2013

KATHRYN M. BEAMER

The Family Law Section of the Florida Bar publicly acknowledges, through the "MAKING A DIFFERENCE" award, those individuals who have made a difference in the lives of the underserved or disadvantaged within our State.  The individuals who receive this award either provide outstanding pro bono services or engage in other types of outstanding volunteer community activities and pursuits that improve the lives of Florida's children and families.

Many may notice that it has been a while since we have promoted our "MAKING A DIFFERENCE" winners.  Well, not anymore.  We are happy to announce that we will be thanking our winners and giving them the congradulations they deserve.

Our latest receipient is Kathryn M. Beamer.  Congratulations Kathy, and thank you for your past and continued efforts on behalf of the children and families of Florida.

Kathy attended Duke University, where she completed her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Psychology.  She graduated from the University of Florida, School of Law in 1978, although her first year of law school was at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  Since 1991, she has dedicated her practice to the area of marital and family law.  Kathy has been Board Certified in Marital and Family Law since 1994, and has served on the Family Law Certification Committee for 6 years, chairing the committee in 2009.

In addition to her active family law practice, Kathy has devoted the past 25 years to pro bono and volunteer service for The Center for Family Services of Palm Beach County.  The Center provides individual and family counseling services regardless of ability to pay, as well as emergency family shelter services for the homeless in Palm Beach County.   Kathy has contributed countless hours to the Center's legal matters, such as reviewing and responding to subpoenas, preparing therapists for deposition and trial testimony in family, delinquency and dependency matters, Motions and hearings for protective orders, and negotiating, reviewing and preparing various legal documents on behalf of the Center.  She has assisted the Center with employment matters, and monitored legal proceedings to report to the Center's Board of Directors on the status of these cases.  She has also held in-house seminars to assist the Center's therapists in understanding and navigating the legal system when the need arises.  Kathy has served on the Center's Board of Directors for the past 25 years, and has served as the Board's President for three separate terms.  She currently serves not only on the Center's Board of Directors, but is also the current President of the Foundation for the Center and is actively involved in the Center's endowment matters.

Not only has Kathy dedicated thousands of hours to the Center for Family Services of Palm Beach County, she has also devoted a portion of her practice to the representation of indigent clients in Palm Beach County.   She received pro bono family service awards from the Palm Beach County Bar Association in 1993, 1996 and 2012.  Further, she received Special Commendations from the Florida Supreme Court in 2004 for her pro bono work.

Kathy is also actively involved in the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar.  She currently serves on the Executive Council and has served in leadership positions for several of the Section's committees.

When Kathy is not engaged in other commitments, she enjoys ballroom dancing, a passion of hers for the past ten years.  She has competed internationally on several occasions, the most recent being March, 2012 in New Zealand.  Past competitions have taken Kathy to such extraordinary locations as Italy, Austria and Hungary.   International travel is one of Kathy's yearnings, and she has also toured Spain, Greece and Australia.  She further serves on the Board of Directors for her homeowner's association.

               Congratulations Kathy!!!

10th Minority Mentoring Picnic

November 9 in Hialeah

Mark your calendars and make plans to attend the 10th Minority Mentoring Picnic in Hialeah on Saturday, November 9. The picnic, with a purpose of linking mentors and mentees, takes on special significance this year as The Florida Bar's first African-American president, Eugene Pettis, will attend again to share wise career advice.

President Eugene Pettis at last year's picnic   "The Minority Mentoring Picnic has developed into a 'must attend' event for minority students across the state of Florida," Pettis said. "It is the single place where you can come and network with lawyers and judges from throughout South Florida in a relaxed and fun-filled atmosphere. It has been a pleasure to watch this event grow each and every year. In truth, I think the lawyers and judges who attend, in order to develop mentoring relationships, are getting as much out of it as the law students. That is by definition a win-win."

The picnic's creator, Miami lawyer John Kozyak, grew up in a totally segregated community and was in high school when the 1964 civil rights legislation was implemented, sparking his longtime commitment to creating opportunities for minority students. The Kozyak Minority Mentoring Foundation is gearing up to fund four $5,000 scholarships so that minority students can intern for a judge or work for a nonprofit next summer.

Law students from all over the state - and even some from out of state - gather at noon at Amelia Earhart Park, at 401 East 65 St., Hialeah, hoping to receive advice from lawyers and judges while they work to get their law degrees and enter the legal profession.

Under the shade of the "Leaders and Legends" tent, law students have gotten valuable advice from Florida's legal luminaries, such as former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, former ABA President Steve Zack, and Florida Supreme Court Justice Peggy Quince.

Amid the music and laughter and tents of delicious food, the mentoring magic works. Here's what Florida Coastal law student Jennifer Cornwell had to say: "I am a minority student who completed a brief form at the picnic. As a result, Mr. Kozyak contacted me himself. He actually wanted to help. He gave me honest feedback about my resume and answered my questions via email. . . .Mr. Kozyak's feedback helped me to obtain a federal judicial externship for the summer. Thank you, mentors. A small investment goes a long way."

We hope you will join our Executive Council Members Robin Scher and Steve Berzner and our other volunteers and help us man the Family Law Section Booth.  To RSVP your participation at our booth, please email Robin at:   [email protected]
