PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
|
Dear Members, Sponsor and Friends of FEI;
As we move into Spring I would like to encourage all of our members, sponsors and friends to continue to help spread the word about FEI and the Chicago Chapter. We had an excellent Fall and Winter season of dinner meetings, professional development sessions, social events and, of course, the Chicago CFO of the Year Awards last November. And we have an outstanding upcoming calendar of events over the next several months including our Junior Achievement "Take Your Work to Kids" day on April 7 and our annual Kellogg School of Management Professional Development day on May 3. Just take a look at the "Events" section of this newsletter and I think you'll be impressed with everything we have planned.
Now I ask that everyone make the extra effort to continue to raise the profile and awareness of our chapter. Our chapter membership has increased by almost 5% over the last 12 months! I am sure the quality and breadth of our events and offerings over this past year has contributed to that growth. But there are literally thousands of senior financial executives in the Chicago market who qualify for membership and either don't know about us, or have just not taken that next step to attend as a guest and consider membership. You can all help us grow and continue to prosper by inviting prospective member guests to an upcoming event. In most cases they can attend free of charge and our Membership Committee will even assign someone to welcome them. Just let Susan know and we'll handle the coordination.
But there is more that you can do. When you see LinkedIn postings or tweets about FEI Chicago events, "like" them, "share" them and "retweet" them, as appropriate! It only takes a moment and a few clicks of the mouse but it can multiply the exposure of our announcements many times over. Those thousands of prospective members are out there and many of them are in your network of contacts. The first step towards capturing their interest in membership is for them to know about us. Help spread the word!
Otis Usher
Director of Finance, PLS Financial Services

KELLOGG/FEI CHICAGO CHAPTER
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
TUESDAY, MAY 3, 2016
|
Northwestern Kellogg School of Management and the FEI Chicago Chapter Professional Development Program
On Tuesday, May 3, the Chicago Chapter will hold its annual full day Professional Development program at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. All sessions will be held at the James Allen Center, Kellogg's state of the art executive training facility on Northwestern's Evanston campus. Classes will be taught by outstanding Kellogg professors Robert Wolcott and Sergio Rebelo.
A three hour morning session will be taught by Robert Wolcott, Co-Founder & Executive Director of the Kellogg Innovation Network (KIN) and a Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Professor Wolcott's topic will be Innovation in an Era of Rapid Change. Today is the slowest pace of change we'll experience for the rest of our lives. Every organization must have and continually update a portfolio of options to survive and thrive over the long term. Dr. Wolcott will provide context for many of the changes underway, and share some approaches to enhancing organizational innovation performance.
In the afternoon, we will have a second three hour session with Sergio Rebelo, the Tokai Bank Chair in International Finance at the Kellogg School of Management, where he has served as Chair of the Finance Department. Professor Rebelo does research on macroeconomics and international finance. Professor Rebelo's topic Mega Trends in the World Economy will focus on the outlook for the world economy. Session discussions will include growth prospects in China, oil prices and the commodity super cycle, changes in the value chain and cycles of overvaluation and undervaluation of the U.S. dollar. Changes in the labor market and in consumer behavior will also be highlighted. The full day program will include continental breakfast, buffet lunch, coffee breaks and closing cocktail reception. Participants can Earn 6 CPE Credits.
Cost: $125 for FEI Members and Chicago Chapter Sponsors $300 Guests (Prospective members who join FEI, will receive a dues rebate)

SPA Event
"Women in the Workforce"
Kate Robu, McKinsey's Financial Institutions Group and McKinsey's Risk Practice
WHEN: Monday, May 9, 2016 7:30am - 9:00am
WHERE: Gene & Georgetti Rosemont 9421 W. Higgins Rd., Rosemont (Free parking)
Continental Breakfast will be served Free to FEI Chicago Chapter Members; $25 Guests RSVP to info@feichicago.org or 312-263-1661 by May 5. Click here to read more and register.
Join SPA on Monday, May 9 for a lively breakfast discussion on women in the workforce based on recent McKinsey and Lean In studies. These studies find: Women are still highly under-represented at the top of corporations and leak throughout the pipeline - majority of countries report less than 10% female CEOs; U.S. has 17% women in the C-suite. Current workplace cultures and mindsets are limiting advancement:
- Women are 25% less confident they will reach top management - 40% of women don't believe their leadership styles fit; nearly half of women believe they have fewer opportunities than men
- Women face barriers: more staff roles than men (vs. line roles) and gender-skewed networks
|
Six intervention types can help: financial incentives; technology and infrastructure; economic opportunity creation; capability building; advocacy and attitudes; and laws, policies, and regulations. Within corporations, implementing a gender-diversity ecosystem is critical, including: strong CEO commitment, key KPIs, working through the selection and promotion funnel, and cultural enablers.
We will meet at Gene & Georgetti Rosemont for breakfast. Kate Robu from McKinsey will present the findings from these studies and will lead our discussion. We hope you will join us!
Kate Robu is a core practitioner in the McKinsey's Financial Institutions Group and a global leader in McKinsey's Risk Practice. She leads topics in the following service lines: Digital, Mortgage Lending, Operational Risk, and Regulatory Compliance. In her six years with McKinsey, Kate has served leading U.S. and international banks, wealth management firms and insurance companies on topics of tech-enabled operational transformation, operational risk management, frontline capability building, pricing and data analytics. Kate's projects took her around the world, which allowed her to gain exposure to a variety of global financial markets, including U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin America and Asia.
In addition to her content expertise, Kate's professional toolkit includes ample experience in driving innovative solutions to complex problems, leading cross-functional teams through large transformation programs, managing change, accelerating impact, and building trust-based relationships with executive stakeholders to secure buy-in and facilitate decisioning process. She holds an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, with major in Corporate Finance, graduated with Honors.
FEI's Strategic Professional Alliance (SPA) builds strategic relationships and social capital across FEI's women members, draws upon FEI's women members' collective knowledge, and explores areas of interest to women in financial leadership roles. Our meetings are open to ALL FEI members.

FEI CHICAGO CHAPTER - THE STORY BEHIND THE 4Cs

The FEI Chicago Chapter Membership Committee put their heads together to embark on a way for all FEI members to highlight the value components of FEI membership. We poured over the C's that clearly identify our value spheres. This visual above is the result of our efforts and we will strive to incorporate this graphic in our chapter communications. Each person involved in our chapter is encouraged to share their own FEI story using the 4C's as a guide.

CAREER MANAGEMENT GROUP NEWS
|
Armed with their individual BOSI Assessment, the attendees at the March 3rd Career Management Breakfast were able to learn and understand more about their inter-entrepreneur. Understanding whether they possess a Builder, Opportunist, Specialist or Innovator DNA and knowing what to do with that "entrepreneurial DNA" can be game-changing. The attendees were able to figure out which type of entrepreneur/executive they are while opening an insight into the predisposed strengths, weaknesses and best practices for people who are wired like them.
Hopefully by our April 7th breakfast Spring will be in full bloom and as part of your Spring cleaning you plan to dust off your resume and join Kristen Urhausen-Kummerer for her presentation
Anatomy of a Resume. Kristen has 22 years of Big Four recruiting and operations leadership experience at KPMG LLP and Arthur Andersen & Co, SC. Over the years, she has interviewed and hired hundreds of professionals ranging from administrative assistants to senior executives. In addition, she played a significant role in selecting and implementing KPMG's applicant tracking system and designed and developed the behavioral interview methodology used by the firm's hiring managers and partners nationwide. Kristen is currently the Founder and Principal Advisor at Career Advisor 4 You and focuses on partnering with job seekers as they prepare for their job search by providing insight on current resume trends, preparing them for interviews and helping to increase their confidence
To examine the
Anatomy of a Resume, Kristen will review the 2 main types of resumes, review current resume trends for each section of a resume, share information about what recruiters are looking for when reviewing resumes, show a couple examples of resumes that recently went through resume makeovers (before and after) and share some basic job searching advice. Whether you are currently in the market for a new job or, will be in the future, you need to have a resume that captures your accomplishments and career experiences and makes you stand out.
