Dr. Danielle Ofri, writing in a New York Times op-ed piece on August 13, 2015, states:
 
Here it was again: the dreaded pain conundrum. A patient requests a strong pain medication and the doctor has to figure out whether the request is legitimate.
 
This is an aggravating situation on many levels. On the individual level, there are the immediate issues of trust - do I trust his story, and, conversely, how will my decision affect his trust in me?

Then there is the larger issue of how we doctors treat pain in general.
 
Undertreating pain, we are admonished, violates the basic ethical principles of medicine. On the other hand, we are lambasted for overprescribing pain medications, enabling addicts and creating an epidemic of overdose deaths.
Standalone ERs Fail to Bend the Cost Curve

Florida and Texas are the latest states to see an increase in the number of standalone emergency rooms popping up in high-traffic, commercial areas.

Indeed, patients who go to free-standing ERs often complain that the facilities provide misleading pricing information. And critics say that many patients could receive less expensive care from a physician practice or urgent care facility...
