Cooling Behavior of Three Microalloyed Forging Steels Reported

Microalloyed forging steels require cooling rates greater than still air to obtain the best form of precipitates and increase strength.  This study, supported by the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation, determined the critical cooling rates to produce interphase precipitation that results in peak hardness value for three different steel forgings alloys - 15V30M, 38MnVS6 and 15V41.

The Colorado School of Mines report on  "Cooling Behavior of Three Microalloyed Forging Steels"  is now available in the Technical Report Digital Library on the FIA Website.  Graduate student Sami Syammach, undergraduates Matt Glazier and Jason Duran worked alongside Professors Kip Findley and Chet Van Tyne complete this study.

Washington Update from NAM

The President will sign yet another Executive Order . This one will mandate that all federal contractors, subcontractors and lower-tiered subcontractors provide "one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked." The paid sick leave may be used for illness or for other reasons similar to those in the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The sick time may be carried over to the next year and will impact approximately 300,000 workers.

You may notice this initiative is nearly identical as the "The Healthy Families Act," which, after failing last year, has been reintroduced in both the House and the Senate by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).  These bills have little to no chance of moving, so the Administration is giving it life through an Executive Order on federal contractors. The Department of Labor will issue regulations by September 30, 2016 to be effective by January 1, 2017.
