Fox Island Emergency Plan
Emergency preparation is integral to our life on Fox Island. We are blessed with the beauty and isolation of the island, however, we are also dependent on our Fox Island bridge. That dependence suggests emergency preparedness is essential and on-going.
Your Emergency Preparedness (EP) Team continues to move forward. Currently, testing of our Emergency Communications System takes place weekly with the Fox Island HAM Net group that includes our HAM operators and some members of our Citizen Patrol with their hand held radios. HAM training for other team members and residents will be held in the near future as classes become available.
With self-sufficiency as the cornerstone of emergency preparedness, a part of that is keeping your vehicle gas tank half full as a minimum, and your propane tank, too! Winter time is a particularly important time to ensure you have those basics in good supply.
NEED MONEY FOR EDUCATION?
FICRA will hold a Student Speaker Competition with substantial awards: 1st place-$1000, 2nd place-$750, and 3rd place-$250. The competition will be open to only Fox Island students in junior or senior years in high school; or freshman and sophomore years in college or trade school. The competition will include both a written submission and a verbal presentation on a pre-selected subject. Applications, with instructions, will be posted in early January on ficra.org.
UPDATE ON FOX ISLAND BRIDGE AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
We are about due for an update on the status for repair, or replacement, of the Fox Island bridge. FICRA's President, Jim Braden, is currently in touch with the County's Engineering staff and working with our political representatives, Derek Young, Michelle Caldier, Jan Angel, and Derek Kilmer on bridge design and funding.
Another meeting with concerned citizens and Pierce County officials is in the works to address some of the issues the County uncovered in their survey. The meeting will be held at the Nichols Community Center on 9th Ave. Watch for date and time postings on ficra.org and this FICRA Flash newsletter.
WISHING ALL A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Crime Watch Tip of the Month
Happy New Year Fellow Fox Island Residents!
As we begin 2017, one of the biggest promises is to exercise. A lot of us, especially dog walkers, are out very early in the morning. If you are driving, please be aware of this and the fact that our kids will be starting back to school on January 2nd.
Our residents that are snowbirds might consider turning off the propane tanks when away for extended times. However, you will need to ignite the system on your return. If in doubt on how to reignite your system, your propane company can provide the necessary instructions.
With boats out of the water, they can become easy prey for thefts. In order to reduce any possibility of being targeted, remove oars, paddles, gas cans and other items that you store in the boat.
Always make sure to let someone know when you will be away from home for a trip.
Citizen's Patrol offers a free daily home check service with 48 hour's notice. 2016 was our most active year with over 1000 daily checks. Please call 549-7744 to apply for the service or if you have questions as to why the flags are up on the bridge.
Your Citizen's Patrol Members
For parents who are looking for a growth opportunity for your children, check into the Scouting program. Scouting offers challenges for of all ages.

FICRA members who have not yet received a phone book may pick one up at any FICRA and/or FICRA TRUST Board meeting (usually held the second
of the month at 7:00pm) or you may also pick one up at the Museum during regular business hours.
The Fox Island Community & Recreation Association (FICRA) was formed in 1970. Its purpose is to promote matters pertaining to the health and safety of Fox Island residents, to promote the welfare and development of Fox Island, and to provide recreation and social activities of a non profit nature as a public service to the residents of Fox Island.
The FICRA Building Trust operates and maintains the Nichols Community Center, the Fox Island Playground and the adjacent Fox Island Nature Center.
FICRA and the FICRA Trust are volunteer organizations that are here to serve our Island community by providing many great social and recreational activities for islanders to enjoy.
FICRA relies on its many volunteer members to make it all happen, from the Easter Egg Hunt, The Plant Sale and student speaker competition in the Spring, Fox Island Fair in the Summer, concerts, Christmas Tree Lighting and our Party with a Purpose event in the Winter. Come join us and see how you can help FICRA continue to provide many great activities for our community to enjoy. Go to
and click on the 'contact us' button, or e-mail us directly at
. We are always looking for volunteers.
To become more familiar with what these organizations do and their great value to the Fox Island community, attend a monthly Board meeting (open to the public). We'll be glad to show you around. You may also call the FICRA President, Jim Braden, at 253-459-5588 for more information.
