Drill Report:
Our emergency preparedness team participated on June 8, day 2 of the 4 day Cascadia Raising state-wide drill. Working in cooperation with the Pierce County Department of Emergency Management (DEM) our team tested the components of the Fox Island emergency plan for the first time. This plan has been developed over the past two and a half years. The basis of our drill was a 9.0 earthquake which rendered the Fox Island bridge inoperable. Our drill was deemed successful. The participation levels tested were as follows:

Communications
  • Activated the command center located at the Nichols Community Center
  • Powered up our emergency generator as our only power source
  • Staffed the ham operator station also located at the Nichols Community Center
  • Citizen Patrol members checked in at the NCC and were given route assignments
  • The specific communication tests included:
Established primary contact with fire station #5 Gig Harbor (interim source to county DEM)
Texted radio station KGHP (to establish contact but not to transmit per FEMA)
Contacted MRC (Medical Reserve Corps) regarding use of medical supplies
Internal communications:
Made contact with citizen patrol members traversing the island
Made contact with the shelter location (Alliance Church)
Made contact with flotilla (boat stationed off Fox Island to be used for evacuation)

Neighborhoods
  • A total of 30 block captains participated (out of 75)
  • Assigned 4 Citizen Patrol members (covered 5 pre-established routes)
  • Citizen Patrol in contact with block captains to determine needs
  • Citizen Patrol communicated needs to command center
Shelters
  • Alliance Church activated (United Church of Christ was deemed inoperable per structural engineer for this drill)
  • Alliance church deemed ready to receive persons
  • Alliance church made request for resources
Medical
  • Medical team activated
  • Contact made with MRC to access medical supplies (trailer opened)
  • Triage center opened (NCC)
  • Triage center advised on medical needs of block captains
Transportation
  • Marine radio system tested
  • Citizen Patrol units not used for transport during the drill, only for communications
  • Flotilla not used for transport during the drill, only for communications
Infrastructure
  • Simulated a water line break
  • Simulated repair in cooperation with Fox Island Mutual Water Company
  • Established infrastructure communication with command center
The FICRA Trust thanks all members of the Fox Island Emergency Prepa redness Team and members of Citizen Patrol who participated in the drill! The residents  thank you for your efforts on their behalf.

To recognize their efforts, an open house will be held at the Nichols Community Center on July 13th at 6:00pm. All residents are invited. Light refreshments will be served.
Crime Watch Updates

Happy Fourth of July from your Citizen Patrol members! Please remember to be safe during this weekend.

July is Crime Watch month. All residents will be receiving our yearly flyer over the next week. In order for us to patrol the island, maintain a visual presence at the bus stops, do home checks and have an off-duty officer patrol for us, we need donations. We are so grateful for all of you that have been so generous these last 14 years. We are truly happy that we can serve this wonderful community and provide the patrols for all of you.

In recognition of our wonderful island residents, as well as, Crime Watch and Emergency Preparation Teams, we will be hosting an All-Island Meet & Greet at the Nichols Community Center on Wednesday, July 13th from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Cookies, lemonade, popcorn will be served. Please bring your entire family.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us on our hotline (253-549-7744).

About FICRA

The Fox Island Community & Recreation Association (FICRA) was formed in 1970. Its purpose is to promote matters pertaining to the health and safety of Fox Island residents, to promote the welfare and development of Fox Island, and to provide recreation and social activities of a non profit nature as a public service to the residents of Fox Island.

The FICRA Building Trust operates and maintains the Nichols Community Center, the Fox Island Playground and the adjacent Fox Island Nature Center.  FICRA and the FICRA Trust are volunteer organizations that are here to serve our Island community by providing many great social and recreational activities for islanders to enjoy.

FICRA relies on its many volunteer members to make it all happen, from the Easter Egg Hunt, The Plant Sale and student speaker competition in the Spring, Fox Island Fair in the Summer, concerts, Christmas Tree Lighting and our Party with a Purpose event in the Winter. Come join us and see how you can help FICRA continue to provide many great activities for our community to enjoy. Go to  ficra.org and click on the 'contact us' button, or e-mail us directly at  info@ficra.org. We are always looking for volunteers.

To become more familiar with what these organizations do and their great value to the Fox Island community, attend a monthly Board meeting (open to the public). We'll be glad to show you around. You may also call the FICRA President, Jim Braden, at 253-459-5588 for more information.
