Fall Clean-up Party

The annual NCC Fall Clean-up will be held on  October 1st ( October 8  is the back-up date in case of bad weather). Please join your Fox Island neighbors and support our Nichols Community Center.

Below is a list of outstanding items that need to be done at the NCC.  These can be done during the Fall Cleanup or at any time a person or crew wants to take one on.  Working during the Fall Cleanup has the advantage of the famous Taco Soup lunch afterward - with a little dessert thrown in!  If you want to undertake a project, call Carolyn Braden, 549-4542, or Jean Peterson, 549-2397, to set the timing.  For specifics and timing on some of the larger jobs, contact Jim Braden, 459-5588 for materials and information.

Fall Cleanup jobs:
1.    Paint second coat on garage west wall.
2.    Repair picnic bench.
3.    Repair hose box on South wall of NCC.
4.    Cut in the last two bricks on the walk to the gazebo.
5.    Repair split rail fence north of gazebo.
6.    Install ell on end of roof drain system.
7.    Repair soccer net and build a second for the sports field.
8.    Mulch the gardens.
9.    Trim grass off the concrete walks.
10.   Scrape the parking lot to eliminate potholes.
11.   Install labels onto kitchen drawers/doors.
12.   Vacuum basement stairs & floor.

Larger jobs:
1.   Install Scouts bench at the sandbox area.
2.   Install irrigation system at NCC perimeter.
3.   Rebuild old stairs cover on west side of NCC.
4.   Relocate basement shelves for clear box storage.
5.   Resurface NCC south side doors.
6.   Expand landing for Scouts flag storage.
7.   Repair north deck railing and bottom step.
8.   Finish southwest basement sump for winter rains.
9.   Finish installation of camera system.
10.   Build wall between stalls in garage.

Major jobs:
1.   Install electrical to garage.
2.   Grade south parking lot to drain away from NCC.
Quilting Group Forming!

A new group is forming for island quilters. Our very first meeting will
be Friday, October 14 at 10:00 at the Nichols Community Center.  We will primarily be a working group coming together to share ideas,  techniques, and, most importantly, our passion for quilting. All levels of  quilters - from experienced to "I've always wanted to learn to quilt" -  are encouraged to attend.

Questions? Contact Elaine at emhoumes@gmail.com or 253.514.8855 or Sue at suelester61@hotmail.com or 253.549.4428.

Please join us at our inaugural meeting. Bring a show and tell and ideas for the future of our new island group.
Fox Island Emergency Plan

Under the direction of Doug Nelson, our Operations Head, and with the help of David Smith from the  Fox Island Yacht Club, several members of our Emergency Preparation Team circled Fox Island to  locate way-points and coordinates where persons could be evacuated during an emergency if  the bridge was out of operation. There are many considerations for such evacuations especially tidal. Later  this year, information gathered will be shared with boaters who volunteered to help in an emergency.

The Neighborhood Team under the direction of Bob Bowser is updating its list of Block Captains (BC'S)  to incorporate new sign ups during the Fox Island Fair. The County (DEM) Department of Emergency  Management has expressed interest in conducting more training for Fox Island volunteers.

Please remember to download a copy of the UPDATED EMERGENCY PLAN for FOX ISLAND ( ficra.org).

Crime Watch Updates

Welcome Fall! It brings us darker mornings, some rain and falling leaves. Please drive  carefully and remember we have kids walking to the bus stops. It is always a good  time to have your tires and brakes checked on your car.

We thought it would be a good time to give you some Crime Watch Stats. During the  first 7 months of this year, we only had 2 car break-ins and 2 homes that were left unlocked and had articles stolen.
While we do not claim credit for the low crime rate on property, we do believe that the increased presence of our patrol members through house checks and school bus monitoring may make a difference. Congrats to everyone for locking cars and homes.

We want to thank everyone who participated and supported the All Island Garage Sale and purchased the maps. We truly appreciate our island residents for their contributions.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us on our hotline (253-549-7744).

About FICRA

The Fox Island Community & Recreation Association (FICRA) was formed in 1970. Its purpose is to promote matters pertaining to the health and safety of Fox Island residents, to promote the welfare and development of Fox Island, and to provide recreation and social activities of a non profit nature as a public service to the residents of Fox Island.

The FICRA Building Trust operates and maintains the Nichols Community Center, the Fox Island Playground and the adjacent Fox Island Nature Center.  FICRA and the FICRA Trust are volunteer organizations that are here to serve our Island community by providing many great social and recreational activities for islanders to enjoy.

FICRA relies on its many volunteer members to make it all happen, from the Easter Egg Hunt, The Plant Sale and student speaker competition in the Spring, Fox Island Fair in the Summer, concerts, Christmas Tree Lighting and our Party with a Purpose event in the Winter. Come join us and see how you can help FICRA continue to provide many great activities for our community to enjoy. Go to  ficra.org and click on the 'contact us' button, or e-mail us directly at  info@ficra.org. We are always looking for volunteers.

To become more familiar with what these organizations do and their great value to the Fox Island community, attend a monthly Board meeting (open to the public). We'll be glad to show you around. You may also call the FICRA President, Jim Braden, at 253-459-5588 for more information.
