LotFotL in the Quick!
Important CSA information that you should know.

The End: This will be the final delivery for the 2014 season.  You can still visit us, at least a few more times, at the Milwaukee County Winter Farmers' Market.

Always check the roster: Before you take anything, please check the roster sheet, find your name, and only take what is listed after it. Call us if you have questions, but please ... only take what is listed.

Recipes: Don't forget to click the green items in your contents list to find more recipes. (It's like hidden treasure)

NOTE: As always please remember that unclaimed food at the end of the day is donated. If you missed your pickup you may wish to check in with your site host to see if the food has been removed yet from the site.  The farm, however, is not in a position to replace unclaimed food.

Winter Roots: Portuguese Pork Stew Recipe

Ingredients
  • 11/2 lbs boneless pork shoulder (cut into 1 1/2-inch chunks)
  • freshly ground pepper (Salt and, to taste)
  • 2 tsps paprika
  • 2 tsps cumin seed
  • 3 tbsps olive oil
  • 1 purple onion (sliced)
  • 4 large garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 cup red wine (full-bodied)
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 lb sweet potatoes (peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks)
  • 3 carrots (large, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks)
Directions:

Brown the pork: Season the pork generously with salt and pepper, then sprinkle with the paprika and cumin seeds, patting them firmly into the meat.

In a large, deep fry pan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, warm the olive oil. Working in batches if needed, add the pork and cook, turning as needed, until browned on all sides, 6 to 8 minutes total. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the pork to a plate. Reduce the heat to medium, add the onion and garlic to the pan and saut until softened, 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the wine and broth and return the pork and any accumulate juices to the pan.

Cook the stew: Bring the stew to a simmer, then cover the pan, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour. Add the sweet potatoes and carrots, re-cover and continue to cook until the meat and vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes more. Season with salt and pepper.

Divide the stew among shallow bowls and immediately. Serves 4 to 6.

Thank You

What a great year it has been!  We would like to thank everyone for playing their part in the LotFotL Community. Each year I am amazed by they many ways our members, customers, and friends and family contribute to the farm. Although, it is always our intention to give back, creating an equal energy exchange, we always end up feeling like we got a great deal.  The loyalty of our supporters means so much to us.  The relationships that we build and grow from year to year with staff, volunteers, and customers, is absolutely invaluable.  The kind words and stories that are passed on to friends and colleagues makes such a difference. Last but not least,  the income we are able to earn at the farm, allows us to do this year after year.  After all, the electric company still doesn't accept broccoli. And the last time I tried to trade zucchini for gas, I got a strange look.  So, whatever you are doing to support this community, we Thank You wholeheartedly and truly believe
that this farm wouldn't be what it is without you.

We hope to see you next season.  Remember that you can sign up for the 2015 CSA season now and still get last 2014 prices for next year's food.  Thanks again.
