Principal's Message
|
Greetings Frelinghuysen Community,
Congratulations to the FMS Falcon baseball team for their 5-0 shutout victory over Long Valley in the County Championships yesterday - culminating an undefeated season for the boys!
This is the third consecutive county championship for the FMS baseball squad, led by Mr. Manahan, Ms. Stetz, and Mr. Davis. Thank you for your commitment and effort, and for representing our school in such a positive way!
In other news, this past week we learned that the
FMS Select Choir received the award for Best Middle School Performance in Vocal Music at the County College of Morris Teen Arts Festival. In addition, the FMS Jazz Band received the first place award for Best Middle School Performance in Instrumental Music. Congratulations to all of our students for their efforts, and thank you to Mr. Gallagher and Mr. Gonsky for building such an exemplary program at FMS.
We have arrived at the final week of the 16-17 school year. When I started at FMS in August, I held a Parent Tea to meet our parent community, and to elicit feedback about the school community, including your perceptions of its strengths and areas for growth. Now, after a full year at FMS, I would like to end this year by providing our parents with a similar opportunity.
I invite you to join me this Tuesday, June 14th at 9 am in the FMS Media Center to share your thoughts on the school year over a cup of coffee. I hope to see you there.
One final note - I just want to remind everyone that Wednesday, June 15th, Thursday, June 16th, and Friday, June 17th are now half days, with June 17th being the final day of the year.

Co-President's Message
|
Hello All,
Another school year has gone by and we are sure the children are all looking forward to enjoying the summer vacation after all of their hard work!
Reminder: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are all 4 hour and 20 minutes sessions.
We are all excited for our 8th grade moving up ceremony on the 21st. We are so proud of them and we wish them much luck in high school and beyond.
At our last meeting, we voted in the 2016-2017 HSA Board. It is as follows:
Co-Presidents Lucy Webber Gale Grennan
|
Communication Chairs Patty Haralampoudis Ellen Hays
|
Volunteer Coordinator Tanya Seaward
|
Secretary Christine Sicat
|
Treasurer Kristin Cunningham
|
|
I would like to thank all of these amazing ladies for their dedication to our school.
Jennifer Smith, our current treasurer, and I will be retiring from our positions this year. Jenn has done an amazing job of juggling the many responsibilities of the post. Thank you for your years of service. You will be missed!
I have spent the last 6 years at Frelinghuysen Middle School. It has been such a wonderful experience working with FMS administration, teachers, students, parents, and such a devoted board. I have developed many meaningful friendships and I will be very sad to leave. This school has given me so many memories and I will cherish them.
Sincerely,
Margaret

Highlight on Mr. U
|
Since it is our last week of school, we thought that rather than do a Question of the Week, it might be nice to highlight our new Principal's first year.
We are quite impressed with Mr. U's first year at FMS. We have witnessed an administrator who truly values the input from our community and is so willing to adapt and make the changes that we need to continue to improve our school.
Thank you Mr. U for:
Coming to the summer Open Houses before your job even officially started, in order to meet and greet parents and students because you felt it was important.
Initiating hosting "Teas with the Principal," morning and evening meetings, and a special workshop with parents to explore their feedback on shaping the future of our school.
Recognizing the importance of language arts and rearranging scheduling to include it each day for all three grades.
Changing our cycle classes to give children a choice to pursue their interests.
Creating an incentive plan, which includes earning tickets for a tricky tray with exciting prizes for children who are exhibiting positive behavior.
Wanting the children to be inspired as they walked through the building and initiating the installation of the beautification committee, which updated bulletin boards, installed plants, and created posters and pictures.
Coming to our concerts, games, family events, and socials. Chaperoning our overnight DC trip, and for your enthusiastic approach to becoming a part of our community.
Planning an outdoor eating area for next year, for our children to give them some fresh air and sunlight on their lunch break.
Working on a mural project for next year to beautify the cafeteria and also create a community building experience for our incoming 6th graders.
Mr. U, we are very lucky to have U!
- Margaret and Lucy

A Great Article on MSD!
|
Check out this fantastic article on TapInto Morristown, discussing the New Jersey Innovation Summit, where Mackey Pendergrast, Superintendent of the Morris School District, along with Erica Hartman, Director of Technology Integration, were presenters.
It's yet one more example of the leadership Morris School District is bringing to the state of New Jersey, as well as a great overview of our district's philosophy on using technology to further education, bridge the digital divide, and positively impact student achievement.

Thank You!
|
A HUGE thank you goes out to Anne Barrett for running the Snack Bar this past year. Her organizational skills and ability to fill the roster with volunteers were unparalleled. We would also like to thank Heather Morgan, who spearheaded the purchasing side of snack bar.
We would also like to commend them both for bringing many more "healthy options" to fuel our student-athletes growing bodies. We are very grateful for all your efforts!

8th Grade Graduation Info
|
Make sure you have returned the graduation rehearsal permission form to school so that there are enough buses for students who need transportation on June 21 to the
rehearsal. Click here to print a copy.
If you are driving your child to the rehearsal, you must also pick them up (no returning bus will be provided).
Please note, all parents are responsible for transporting their children to and from the actual ceremony the evening of Tuesday June 21.

An Important Request from Erica Hartman
|
Erica Hartman,
District Supervisor of Technology Integration, has requested that parents complete and return the attached survey regarding the district's efforts to fulfill our Future Ready Pledge.
It is important that as many parents as possible return the survey, as results will only be valid if a certain percentage of return from parents is received. Your help in getting us to that important return percentage is much appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!

MEF Spring Teacher Tributes
|
Are you looking for that perfect end-of-the-year gift to celebrate a wonderful teacher? Are you moving on from a school and looking for a way to thank the elementary school "specials" teachers? Are there teachers or staff members in the Morris School District who have made a difference in your child's life?
Through the MEF Spring Teacher Tributes program, you can honor administrators, coaches, counselors, assistants, custodians, librarians, nurses, conductors, bus drivers, secretaries, cafeteria staff and of course, teachers - by making a donation in their name. Each honoree will receive a rose with a personalized message from you and your child.

Join an FMS Committee
|
As this school year winds down, we are looking ahead to 2016-17 for a few volunteers to help on our committees. Being part of an HSA committee is a great way to help our school community, and also offers a wonderful opportunity to have a glimpse into the life of your middle schooler.
The responsibilities range from a couple of hours on a few days, to sending out a Signup Genius to request donations and volunteers, to running our biggest fundraiser of the year. Please take a minute to review the list below to find a position that is right for you:
Snack Bar
We are looking for 2-3 helpers for a snack bar, which runs daily during the sports seasons. We need an overall coordinator to send out the Signup Genius and find parent volunteers to staff the snack bar. We also need another parent willing to help purchase snacks from Costco and/or online ordering. We could also use a volunteer to help on the financial side in coordinating the cash counts and submitting deposits to our treasurer.
Box Tops
This is a great, easy fundraiser that generated over $3000 for FMS this past year. The committee chair will be responsible to put reminders in the Daily Bulletin and supervise collection throughout the year. Also, the volunteer will run a contest between classrooms and coordinate the breakfast party for each house homeroom that brings in the most boxtops.
Please contact Tanya Seaward, Head of HSA Committees, at
[email protected] if you are interested in a position.

he MHS HSA also is looking to fill some committees for the upcoming school year.
Please take a look at the below listed Committees and find the one that's right for you! Feel free to contact the committee chairs listed below if you have additional questions.
The Coffee House runs 4 Friday nights per year. It is an opportunity for the students to showcase their talents, whether it be through music or the arts. Responsibilities include coordinating with administration and the student leader, submitting a grant request to the Municipal Alliance for funding, overseeing the event, sending out a sign-up genius for chaperones, set up, clean up, ordering refreshments, and promotion.
