And the Winner is . . .

Summer is awards season for the board gaming world, and several awards have been announced this week. Let's start with the big ones first:

The Spiel des Jahres
Hanabi is the big winner! Germany's "Game of the Year" award goes to this small, cooperative card game from designer Antoine Bauza (7 Wonders). The SDJ is the biggest, and most prestigious award a game can win.

The Kennerspiel des Jahres
Legends of Andor earned the "Strategy Game of the Year" award from the same jury that selects the SDJ. This is a cooperative adventure game designed by Michael Menzel, which makes both winners cooperative games, which is a first for the awards.

The Dice Tower Awards
Unsatisfied with other board game awards, Tom Vasel and his community of podcasters, reviewers, publishers, and designers that make up the Dice Tower Network, formed their own awards committee and just announced their annual awards for 2012. Here are the winners:

Game of the Year: Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game
Best Family Game: Love Letter
Best Game Reprint: Android: Netrunner

Mice and Mystics took home two notable DT Awards - Best Artwork, and Best Theme.

Space Cadets also won two DT awards - Best New Designer, and Most Innovative Game of the Year.

The Origins Awards
Lords of Waterdeep won best board game of the year at the Origins Game Fair convention back in June.

Announcing: FNC's Summer Netrunner League!!

by Brian Little

Along with FNC, I'm starting an informal league for Android: Netrunner players who are looking to get together to play the game, talk about decks, cards, and strategies.

FNC has ordered a game night kit from Fantasy Flight with lots of cool player incentives to be distributed during these get-togethers. The first of which will take place on Friday, July 19th at 6:30 p.m. in the store's game room. We plan to meet every other Friday to follow (the first and 3rd Friday of each month). Be sure to follow the store on Facebook and on BoardGameGeek as we finalize the last few details.

I'm excited to get this going as the game is super fun but really needs a pool of other people to play against for it to really take off. Considering the popularity of the game, I could even see hosting tournaments after new expansions come out so we could try out new decks and see what works.

Feel free to email me with any questions: [email protected]

Letters from Whitechapel
Get ready to enter the poor and dreary Whitechapel district in London 1888 - the scene of the mysterious Jack the Ripper murders - with its crowded and smelly alleys, hawkers, shouting merchants, dirty children covered in rags who run through the crowd and beg for money, and prostitutes - called "the wretched" - on every street corner.

The game takes the players right there. One player plays Jack the Ripper, and his goal is to take five victims before being caught. The other players are police detectives who must cooperate to catch Jack the Ripper before the end of the game. The game board represents the Whitechapel area at the time of Jack the Ripper and is marked with 199 numbered circles linked together by dotted lines. During play, Jack the Ripper, the Policemen, and the Wretched are moved along the dotted lines that represent Whitechapel's streets. Jack the Ripper moves stealthily between circular numbered circles, while policemen move on their patrols between crossings, and the Wretched wander alone between the circular numbered circles.

HeroClix News

by Tim V

We had our latest Fear Itself event last week, and one of our greatest turnouts to date! Our players battled it out in Antarctica, where Skadi's hammer fell when the Red Skull originally summoned it, and on the streets of Paris, where the Grey Gargoyle (as Mokk, Breaker of Faith) has been terrorizing and petrifying the local populace. This time, our representatives of The Mighty had the edge in points, swinging the overall total in their favor.

Out in theaters this week, as well as being available as Heroclix in store, is Pacific Rim. While there have been no official previews, the dials have already shown up online. These figures are unique in Heroclix, representing the gigantic, powerful creatures (and robots) in grand fashion.  The sculpts themselves are about as tall as the tallest "regular" figures, and while they remain on single bases, they all have the Colossal damage symbol, typically reserved for the bigger figures such as Galactus. Additionally, they have huge point costs, and even alone their powers and combat values would make them formidable opponents in standard games. So it will be interesting to see how these figures will play against each other and against ordinary superheroes.

Be sure to let us know if you're interested in these figures, as they're bound to move quickly!
