President's Message - Matthew Page, CRPS®, CFP®
Matthew Page
As we transition from 2017 to 2018, I would like to take a moment to thank all of the members, sponsors and board members for making 2017 such a great year. Our chapter saw an increase in sponsorships from 2016 to 2017, while maintaining a stable membership number of approximately 180 members. I would also like to thank everyone that will be coming back in 2018 to continue on the success from the past year.

As a board, we recently came together to discuss our strategic plan for 2018.  One of the themes that was brought up during our discussion was how are we creating value for our members.  While sponsorship has grown each year for the past couple of years, our membership has remained stable.   Therefore, the board would like some ideas from our members about how to get better attendance at our meetings, as well as generate new members. Essentially, we are looking for your 'why'.  As in, why should someone join FPA and attend our meetings?   Everyone has a different 'why'.  For some people, their 'why' is the networking opportunities, while for others it might be the membership discounts or ongoing education.

During the Chapter Leadership Conference, our current national President, Shannon Pyle, spoke about our value proposition. Actually, he is so convinced that FPA is an organization worth joining, that he tells people they "have to join". At that moment, I realized that when someone asks me about joining FPA or sponsoring our chapter, I shouldn't list off a bunch of reasons why they should join.  Instead, I should tell them they "have to join". After all, that statement is a better indication of my true level of conviction that I have about the value of FPA.

Whatever your 'why' is, I would like to hear your ideas about how we can improve attendance at our meetings and generate new members.  I can be reached at matt@lucasplanners.com.  I look forward to seeing you in the new year.

Happy New Year and Thank You to all of our members for making 2017 another great year!

In 2017 we continued with the offsite mixers for our members and other professional groups; and we enjoyed welcoming guests and new members at the monthly meetings.

We will continue to provide opportunities for our current and prospective members to come together in casual settings in order to network with old and new friends! One of our goals for 2018 is to have more mixers in which we can meet up with allied partners such as CPAs, Estate Planning Attorneys, and the like. Look for more information about theses mixers in the months to come!

FPA NorCal Conference - May 29-30, 2018

We all have a unique story to tell. Ours is the story and 46-year legacy of "inspiring excellence and fostering community" that has made the FPA NorCal Conference one of the most respected conferences in our industry.
A committee of financial industry volunteers works to deliver what Michael Kitces has described as a "perennial top conference for advisors based on its high-quality advanced content." With research and care, speakers are invited whose respective areas of expertise and experience put them at the top of their profession. The committee plans a program that addresses current topics covering a broad range of financial planning subjects-high-level content for experienced professionals. Here is a sneak peek of some of our Workshop Session Speakers who will be a part of the 2018 story of FPA NorCal. Let's take a moment to reflect on the successes of 2017 while making plans to make 2018 an even better year. I'm sure you will agree that 2017 has been quite a year!
Here are some of the great things that happened with Pro Bono in 2017:
  • Rosemont Financial Literacy Project
  • Junior Achievement stock market challenge
  • Financial Literacy fair at the California State Capitol
  • 2017 Greater Sacramento Financial Planning Day, with keynote speaker Betty Yee
  • Expanded relationships with local non-profit agencies (WEAVE, United Way, My Sister's House, Junior Achievement, Sacramento Community Foundation)
  • FPA Pro Bono for Cancer initiative
However, we can't rest on our laurels. Like others on the board, I came back from the FPA Chapter Leaders Conference (CLC) energized. We need to leverage our previous successes to make 2018 even better, so that we can broaden the reach of financial planning experts such as yourself, and to make an even bigger impact on communities, families and individuals that can really benefit from the knowledgeable guidance of the skilled, professional members of our chapter.
