2017 Midwest Compost School a success at UW-Stevens Point
Joe Van Rossum, recycling and solid waste section chief for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, explains compost recipe development to the class
The 2017 Midwest Compost School drew 32 students from Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, and Massachusetts. Held at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point from July 11-13, the school featured 10 experienced instructors and compost-industry experts to deliver a comprehensive agenda.

The UW-Stevens Point Soil and Waste Discipline and the Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology, both in the College of Natural Resources, organized and hosted the school.

The agenda included a mix of classroom work, hands-on activities and field demonstrations. For example, working in small teams, participants used classroom exercises to create recipes for compost, balancing nitrogen and carbon for effective decomposition. They then took those plans outdoors to build demonstration compost piles using various provided materials such as food waste, grass clippings and wood shavings. The middle day of the school featured a tour of Hsu Growing Supply, a composter at Wausau, Wisconsin, where the students also saw demonstrations of equipment by Komptech, Aeromaster, Vermeer, Scarab and Nortrax.

The Midwest Compost School has been held annually since 1995 in various locations in the upper Midwest. This is the first year the school has been hosted by UW-Stevens Point.
