Greetings!
GREETINGS FROM Harmony Bay!
Recently I had the pleasure of lecturing at St John's High School in West Islip where Harmony Bay was required reading for the Contemporary Fiction class. It was delightful to be in front of so many bright minds and faces. I learned that it was the first time for the students to meet an author, hear one speak, or have a book signed. Kudos to St John's dynamic English Department. I'm looking forward to more events with young readers in the near future.

Authors on two continents merge to create a website where readers and authors come together.
BESTSELLERBOUND.COM IS AN innovative forum, created by author Darcia Helle with input from Stacy Juba and Maria Savva, the resident authors on the board. Darcia had the idea for the site. Stacy Juba explains, "Nowadays, with many traditionally published authors holding their digital rights and new authors also having an avenue to independently publish their work-via Amazon Kindle, Create Space, Smashwords, etc.-the line between traditionally published and indie authors is blurring. Darcia saw a need for a site where indie authors from a variety of writing and publishing backgrounds could come together, share ideas, and reach out to readers."
With BestsellerBound, Darcia, Stacy and Maria, wanted somewhere where indie authors would feel welcome, and able to talk about their books and the publishing process and meet readers who would like to try independent books. Maria Savva says, "There are so many fabulous independently published books that no one has ever heard of; BestsellerBound gives the authors a platform, and support from other writers. We believe that anyone who has taken the time to write a book, publish it, and try to sell it, deserves respect-especially with all the rejection they have to go through to get to that stage, and all the obstacles placed in the way. Despite the myth, we know first hand that it's not easy to write a novel. It takes a great deal of hard work. We want to showcase indie authors on BestsellerBound who are passionate about writing. We are lucky to have many extremely talented writers on our forum. BestsellerBound is a place where open-minded readers can stop by and look for new and exciting books to read."
The growing site launched last summer and currently has over 450 members. Maria says, "It is a friendly site. Anyone is welcome to join us. We have a lot of fun there. At the moment, there is a series of Theme Discussions going on, where readers and writers can discuss popular themes chosen by authors. We are also currently compiling an anthology of short stories written by our members. On publication, all profits will go to a literacy based charity. "

E-Books Continue to Lead. | |
THE ASSOCIATION OF American Publishers reported that e-Books outsold their print counterparts in February 2011 and e-Book sales posted a 200% increase over February 2010. A month after Amazon reported that Kindle e-Books were outselling paperbacks, sales of e-Books hit more than $90 million while paperbacks rang up $81.2 million. For the year-to-date e-Books have increased by 169.4% while by contrast all categories of print books combined have declined by 24.8%.
It will be very interesting to watch what happens in the near future when a common format, where any e-Book from any source can be read on any hand-held device, becomes available. According to Deborah E. Gordon, the CEO of First Edition Design, Inc., a developer of mobile-device websites and apps for over 4500 mobile platforms, and a consultant to the e-industry, "E-book technology has put a lot of new authors in the palm of readers hands, where as they have been hindered in the past by traditional publishers. Not everybody is going to love every book; however it should be left up to the reader not a publisher. There are a lot of great authors out there waiting to be read-now is their chance!"
"The book publishing industry has entered a period of long-term decline because of the rising sales of e-book readers," reads an April 28 research note from IHS iSuppli, which predicted a decrease in book revenue at a compound annual rate of three percent through 2014-a reversal from the period between 2005 and 2010, when revenue rose.
For the traditional book publishing industry, the implications of the rise of the e-book and e-book reader markets are frightening, given the decline in paper book printing, distribution and sales," Steve Mather, IHS iSuppli's principal analyst for wireless, wrote in an April 28 statement. "The industry has entered a phase of disruption that will be as significant as the major changes impacting the music and movie business."
The firm predicts that physical book sales will decline at a compound annual rate of 5%. While e-book sales will rise during that same period, the increase won't cover the revenue gap created by the decline in the physical book market. By 2014, the research note predicts, e-books will occupy some 13% of U.S. book publishing revenue, more than twice its current level.
