For more events and more details,

Dear Friend of FPC,

What a great time we had during the Maumee Summer Fair!  The fair presented a "first" for our family and a "first in a while" for our church.  Our family was blessed to experience Maumee at its finest.....what a great event!  Our church was able to take advantage of the crowd, inviting the community to our "Open House."  In addition to approximately one hundred people who toured the building on Saturday, at least as many more people were "touched" by our members in a positive way as we painted faces while handing out balloons and bottled water!  What a great day of "Connecting Christ at Community!"

Now, we are looking forward to "Dedication Sunday" on September 9.  On this morning we will worship together as one church family at 10am in the sanctuary.  As we take a big step into our future, we will glance back at our past with a live bag-piper leading us in worship and a visit from Horatio Conant, himself!  When the worship service concludes it will be followed by a brief, but very special dedication ceremony.  At this time we will recognize all the people, both from within our membership and outside who have helped to make the renovation a reality.  Finally, we will celebrate with cake and ice cream in the fellowship hall as people are encouraged to continuing wandering through the building to admire the blessing God has given us.  I truly hope you will make it a priority to join us for this important and historic morning.  I also hope that you will consider bringing a friend to share in this celebration as we take a major step forward in the life of our church!  Formal invitations to this event are on the "welcome table" or you can download and print a copy by clicking on this link: Dedication Sunday Invitation

God Bless,

Pastor Clint

Upcoming Events (For full schedule of events, please see our website)

Save these Dates!

It may be hard to believe, but summer is here! Mark your calendars for these exciting church events:

  •  DISH AND DINE REGISTRATION:

For those of you who have always wanted to get to know your fellow FPC members better, the perfect opportunity is coming up. The new session of Dish and Dine will start up again in September. For those unfamiliar with the "DD" experience, it is a fun and easy way to get together with others from the church once a month. Once your name is submitted to the new organizer (Sarah Platz) you will be put into groups of around seven or eight people. That small group will then meet once a month for four months for dinner or sometimes brunch or breakfast. It is a group decision as to when, where and at what meal they will gather. The opportunity to eat out once a month with no preparation, good company and good conversation . . . who wouldn't want to join Dish and Dine? If you are interested, please email Sarah Platz at slplatz@bex.net or put a note in her box at church. (boxes are now located in what used to be the restroom outside of the sanctuary). All are welcome, singles and couples, young and old. The more the merrier!   Even if you have been a long time Dish and Dine member, please contact Sarah to confirm your interest for this year.   Please include your email address and/or phone number in your note to Sarah. We hope to see you in September.

  • BIKE CLUB:  We are having a great time exploring some great trails. Next week we will have more information on our next ride. Put a note in Jim Calderone's church mailbox with your name and contact information (cell phone, e-mail).  Contact info is important, in the event we need to cancel a ride due to inclement weather.  Ride locations will be announced in the bulletin and on the FYI weekly e-mail.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

TELEPHONE UPDATE

As we continue to move back into the church building we are learning a new way of being based on the space and technology with which we have been blessed.  One of these is a new phone system that has capabilities too great to count!  This system has the ability to use an automated answering service to direct you to the specific person you are calling.  During this time of transition this has been a great help!

However, once we have hired new administrative assistant we will make sure the phones are answered by an actual person during office hours.....you can never replace the human touch!  Thank you for your continued patience!  Until then, here are the extensions for office employs so that you may move through the automated system quickly:

    • Pastor Clint - Ext. 100
    • Pastor Steve - Ext. 101
    • Susan Platz - Ext. 102
    • Jason Armstrong - Ext. 103
    • Sonya Thomas - Ext. 105
    • Bob Stiles - Ext. 106

FYI Update

In the next couple of weeks with the move back into the church scheduled there will be a reduced FYI going out.  During the rest of the summer we will do some features on upcoming ministry opportunities coming to the Church.  We will send FYI updates out that have a new pastor's corner and any new announcements and prayer requests.  Blessings to you.

Welcome Sonya Thomas to our Staff

Sonya Thomas has been named Administrative Assistant at First Presbyterian Church of Maumee. In her new position she will develop and maintain internal forms of communications for the church and perform office duties.

Sonya has more than 25 years of experience in communications and public relations and has won many awards for her work within the nonprofit, corporate, higher education and Christian publishing job sectors.

Before coming to First Presbyterian Church, Sonya worked at Cardinal Health as a Marketing Consultant. While there, she published a pharmaceutical newsletter and promoted internal activities and initiatives for the Public Affairs department.

Prior to that, she was communications director for the American Heart Association. In this position she implemented cause marketing strategies to raise funds and awareness for the organization. Sonya was also Publisher of The Christian Reporter newspaper and a Public Relations officer at the University of Toledo.

The Toledo native earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Bowling Green State University. She and her husband Alvin have two college-aged children. In her spare time she enjoys attending her book club meetings, biking with friends, photography, camping, traveling and caring for the family pets.

Please welcome Sonya Thomas to our staff.

UT International Student Outreach Opportunity

A local Church ministry is asking for donations for a freecycle that was taking place to benefit international students coming to UT.  If you have items you wish to donate, they can be dropped off at Hope Lutheran Church (2201 Secor Rd. in Toledo) either Monday or Tuesday between 8 and 4.  They did not give me a specific list of what they are accepting, but I know they are asking that no clothing or large furniture be dropped off.  Kitchen utensils, small appliances (toasters, microwaves, etc.), clothing hangars, and small furniture (end tables, lamps, coffee tables, etc.) are probably ok.  Or you can contact Pastor Steve and he will work out delivery to this ministry.  Reaching out to International Students is a great way to touch lives and impact the leadership of other nations.

Habitat For Humanity Build Opportunities

MO! Missions and Outreach has voted favorably to help fund a Habitat Build as a part of our missions opportunities to Connect Christ and Community in the Toledo area.  We just learned of three opportunities to volunteer and would like to know if there are those that have a preference in terms of which project to support.  The two builds are: a new build partnership in August/September; and a Rehab project in October/November.  Please contact Pastor Steve if you have a preference or if you would like to volunteer.  Blessings on the house!

OPEN HOUSE SUCCESS

FPC Open House on Maumee Fair Day a Success!!

Our doors were wide open to the community this past Saturday and there was much excitement as we proudly welcomed guests into our newly renovated church.

Who came? Just to name a few: Old friends among them, a former staff person, Nolan and Erin Hensel were here with their two little boys; our neighbors and Maumee citizens..."came to see what you have been doing"; folks who have been driving by and were curious; members of AA and FPC family members and their guests.  We had nearly 300 people altogether with approximately 100 people, who came inside and toured the renovations to the church campus, wanting to check out our upgrades from the past nine months. They enjoyed guided tours, homemade cookies thanks to generous contributions from our members and also bottled water.

An additional attraction for the day was a bouncy house, which was size-appropriate for children ages 8 and younger. It caught the eye of several families walking uptown to the fair as well as entertained our own children. It was great to see our vision of Connecting Christ and Community being fulfilled.

Who helped to make this day such a success? A great planning committee, 12 cookie bakers, 21 greeters/tour guides, 4 history docents, 3 balloon handlers, 8 face painters, 10 ice cold water hander-outers, one flower arranger and all the folks who have worked so very hard to get us moved back in, unpacked, cleaned up and ready for company!!

Thanks to everyone....well done...our Dedication Sunday is September 9th and

it should be another great day in the life of our church!!

ST. PAUL'S FEED THE HOMELESS

This last Saturday a group of volunteers went to St. Paul's Shelter to provide a great lunch of Deet's Barbeque and christian love.  Even though it was at the same time as our Open House we went and brought the gift of hospitality.  It was great to get to meet and talk to some of those who regularly come to be served food.  We even ran into a young man who is currently living at the Cherry Street Mission who used to come to Pastor Steve's house a few years ago as a friend of his son, Will's.  It is a small world. And it also reminds us how fragile life is and how devastating our economy has been.  It was good to see Joe. We will be praying for him.  You can never tell how a simple visit or act of kindness can make all the difference in the world to a person.  Look for more pictures on our Church website.

JUMP START PRAYER GATHERING
Each Monday morning at 7 a.m. a hardy group of people from FPC gathers together in the Chapel to serve as Prayer Warriors for God.  We gather prayer requests, join together in prayer, and bring back reports of how God is answering our prayers.  What an encouraging and invigorating time!  Some weeks the needs are many and other times there are fewer spoken or written requests.  But the sweetest aspect of these Mondays is to just spend some time in the presence of God.  We have seen some exciting answers to prayer. We have continued to pray for our contractors who are working on the building as well as for those who gather for the AA meetings each week.  One of the things we pray for is that all who enter our building, for whatever reason, would experience a special touch of God's grace and presence.  There is plenty of room at the altar in the Chapel to pray and join us.  If you come you will be blessed.  We are also looking at another time to set up a prayer time for the Church.  So, if Monday morning is not a good time for you, think about it, pray about it and talk to Pastor Steve or Pastor Clint and we can definitely make that happen.  God not only calls us to pray as individuals and churches but he honors those times of prayer, hears and answers prayer.
