11 Minutes A Day
How many things do you do every day that take just over five minutes? Brush and floss your teeth? Walk your dog? Watch a YouTube video? Beginning in August, in as little as 5½ minutes, or 2.4 miles each way, FHHS students can get to the new East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) site and earn credits towards graduation and industry certifications in a number of Career and Technical Education programs. EVIT has been an option for our students for many years, but it is a 40 minute drive to the Mesa Main Campus, and the distance has been an obstacle to having more students take advantage of these programs. In August, we'll be offering EVIT classes right here in Fountain Hills......just a little over five minutes from our main high school campus.
At the beginning of the next school year, the Fountain Hills EVIT campus will be one of the first schools in Arizona to offer a class in one of the most critical and fastest growing fields of our time... Cyber Security. EVIT will also offer Medical Careers 10, the CTE class that serves as the entryway for future studies and careers in Veterinary Technology, Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, and many other health related fields. These new offerings will join our existing CTE classes in Video Productions, Graphic Design, Business Management, Sports Medicine, Photography, and Health Careers at the new campus. For a full list of classes available at the Fountain Hills EVIT campus, see the 2017-2018 FHHS Course Guide.
Transportation will be provided by the district or FHHS students can make the short drive themselves to the EVIT campus, which will be located at the site of the original Four Peaks Elementary School. They will be immersed in the program of their choice for 2½ hours per day, 5 days per week for two to four semesters. These programs are tuition-free and schedules will be arranged to allow for lunch and participation in all after school activities, including clubs and sports.
These courses are just the starting point for the programs EVIT hopes to bring to FHHS. We expect new programs to be added in the coming years as we grow and expand the program.
An EVIT representative will be presenting information about these opportunities to our students during the month of February. She will also join Coffee with Cain on February 14, 2017 so that parents can ask questions in a casual setting.
I encourage you to encourage your child(ren) to consider their 5½ minute options. Make a paper crane? Clean out the side pockets in your car? Chew the flavor out of a piece of gum? Or, drive to an exciting, hands-on, industry-based class that could change their lives?
