FHUSD Maintenance and Operations Override Election

Last spring, a committee comprised of 18 people considered whether or not to make a recommendation to the governing board to call for a special election seeking voter-approval for a new Maintenance and Operations Override. This committee was made up of parents, teachers, business owners, and concerned citizens. Consensus was reached by the committee, a recommendation was made to the board at the May 9, 2017 meeting, and on June 14, 2017 the governing board voted to call for a special election to be held on November 7, 2017. As that date draws closer, I want to take a few minutes of your time to share important information regarding the election and what the M&O Override means for FHUSD.

About Overrides

Arizona state law allows school districts to increase their M&O budgets up to 15 percent more, per year, than the per pupil funding level set by the legislature. M&O funds are used almost exclusively for teachers and staff salaries. Voters in Fountain Hills will decide whether to continue to provide additional support by voting on a proposed increase for a 15 percent M&O Override. If approved, the override would be for seven years and go into effect for the 2018-2019 school year.

What will the Override do for Students?

-Maintain All-Day Kindergarten
-Provide Teacher Salary Increases
-Provide Professional Development
-Hire Additional Staff for Reading Literacy Support
-Financially Reward Staff for Outstanding Performance
-Enable the District to Maintain Outstanding Award-Winning Programs

When is the Election?

Election day is Tuesday, November 7, 2017. A ballot will be mailed to EVERY registered voter beginning October 11, 2017. Ballots may be returned by mail or dropped off at ballot centers prior to, or on, election day. Voters may also vote in-person at a ballot center. The FHUSD Learning Center, located next to the district office at 16000 E. Palisades, is the designated ballot center for this election and will be open the following dates and times:
