APEX Fun Run is Coming to MMES!

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your support of McDowell Mountain Elementary School and the investments you make in your children's lives. We are so excited to reintroduce you to this semester's only major fundraiser, the Apex Fun Run! The Apex Fun Run will last for 2 weeks and will kick off with a Pep Rally on Wednesday, September 6 at 1:15 p.m.!

Please look for  your child's Pledge Kit that they will receive on that day as well as emails from your teachers the following day.

Please visit www.apexfunrun.com to hear about this interactive program that helps schools all over the country raise money while promoting leadership and fitness in the classes.  This ye ar's character theme is Apex United where students will follow Sam, Rob, Wendy, Robin, and Luke who together make up the United Squad. We catch up with our characters while the deceiving Mr. E is constantly testing them. With special powers provided by Omega, these five friends will truly learn what it means to be united along with a surprise none of them saw coming.

During the Apex Fun Run, students are challenged to get pledges for the laps they will run on September 15 to help their school.  Students will run for 30 minutes and average 26-36 laps, with the maximum amount of laps being 36 (each lap is 1/16th of a mile).  Sponsors can pledge $1, $2, $5 or any other amount for each lap students run.  All participants will receive an access code that allows you to enter pledges online.  Funds raised this year will be going to the school to pay for technology equipment and subscription software!

The Apex Fun Run is for every student regardless of financial giving.  All students will receive Apex bands, race-day lap counters, and team awards.  We invite all parents to come to the Apex Fun Run and share in this great event!  The times for the Apex Fun Run are as follows:

Thursday, September 14 in the multipurpose room:

     9:15: Preschool a.m. classes

     1:00: Preschool p.m. classes

Friday, September 15 on the field:

     9:00: Kindergarten

     9:45: 2nd Grade

     10:30: 3rd Grade

     11:15: 1st Grade

For parents: https://vimeo.com/224399946 .  You can help our school be successful in the following four ways:
  • Help connect your child to potential sponsors (family/friends) to acquire pledges.
  • Ask your child about the "United" character lessons, and download the "Apex Fun Run" App!
  • Come to the Apex Fun Run and don't forget to invite others to attend our fun-filled community event.
  • Help volunteer for the race!  We need a few parents to help cheer on students and mark laps. If you would like to volunteer for your student's race, please contact the Fountain Hills PTO by using their contact form at http://www.fhusdpto.org/contact-us/ or by calling the school office at 480-664-5200.
Thank you again for your continued support-we are so excited to begin this journey with you!

Bobby's Thoughts

I've had a really exciting three weeks of school!  I have met a lot of new friends; have new school supplies; am learning some fun things; and I absolutely love my new teacher!  I miss my teacher from last year but when I see her in the hall I can tell by her smile and look on her face she is really proud of how much I've grown up.

It was extra exciting this week with the eclipse!  My mom had a sp ecial pair of glasses for me to wear so I wouldn't damage my eye.
I can tell she really cares about me.  I was able to look up and see how the moon was blocking some of the sun!  I can't wait to see it again and my mom says it will happen again in 2024.  Let me see...in dogs years I will be REALLY old.

We had our first fire drill this year and the alarm was really loud!  My teacher explained to all of my friends that it wasn't a real fire and we would be practicing once a month.  She told us in advance where we would walk quietly to on the playground.  It seemed liked a long walk but I know if there was ever a real fire we would be safe.

You know...I think I'm really going to like school this year.

Four Peaks Rotary Club Teacher of the Month
Reported by Four Peaks Rotary Club member Paul Perrault

Input from local principals helps the Four Peaks Rotary Club recognize teachers on a monthly basis throughout the school year.   In addition to the recognition, the club provides a $250 check for the teachers' use.

The Four Peaks Rotary Club Teacher of the Month demonstrates the following qualities:
  • has the respect of students, parents, and peers
  • brings out the best in each student regardless of individual academic ability
  • is actively involved in providing and promoting high quality educational   opportunities for students in the Fountain Hills Unified School District
Valerie Dehombreux, Principal of McDowell Mountain Elementary School, recently shared with the Four Peaks Rotary Club why she nominated Wendy Bozzi as the Rotary Club's Teacher of the month:

"Mrs. Bozzi is an amazing special education teacher who works with K-3rd grade special needs students at MMES.  No matter the grade or ability level of her students, Mrs. Bozzi is passionate about her job and dedicated to meeting her students' needs.

"Mrs. Bozzi is often the first person a student sees at MMES due to her morning bus duty.  She greets students with a smile and is attentive if any of them appear to be upset or not ready for the school day. Then Mrs. Bozzi works with groups of special needs students throughout the day, providing them with engaging instruction in order to meet the goals of their individualized education programs (IEPs).  She is perseverant in trying a variety of strategies to reach her students and adjusts instruction whenever needed.  Furthermore, the paperwork involved with IEPs as well as the entire special education process is intensive and Mrs. Bozzi performs marvelously.  She has served as a formal team leader, but even without this title, other special education teachers and grade level teachers often seek her out for advice.

"Mrs. Bozzi 's active participation goes beyond the classroom.  Her calm, thoughtful demeanor has been invaluable in her role as a Nonviolent Crisis Intervention trainer for the district.  She is always willing to help staff with any student who is in distress.  In addition, as a volunteer for Liberty Wildlife, Mrs. Bozzi has worked with the counselor and arranged presentations and organized projects such as paper towel collections to help LW's animals.

"Mrs. Bozzi also provided a special education perspective to our district-wide curriculum team, served on the special education program self-monitoring team, and has been an outstanding resource on our school Character Counts and Safety Committees.

"Mrs. Bozzi truly makes a significant difference in the lives and educations of McDowell Mountain students."
Four Peaks Rotary Club (the MORNING club) is a volunteer service organization, whose motto is "Service above Self".   We invite you to check us out at www.fourpeaksrotary.org  or anyone interested in learning more about our activities and meeting our members to join us for a complimentary breakfast. We meet the second and fourth Thursday of every month, at 7 a.m., at Fountain View Village.

A Message From Art Teacher Mrs. Perry

Greetings form the Art Studio!

Thank you parents for turning in your Artsonia permission slips and those of you who have volunteered to help with taking photos of the children's art, I will be contacting you shortly. I have learned that Artsonia will be sending you an email with a link to grant permission for your child's art to be published on the site.

Please click on the link provided in the email and grant your child permission to publish their art on Artsonia. At that time, your child's art can be published and they will have an opportunity to type artist statements. I am so excited to work with those parent volunteers and upload their work to the site and for you to see their work on this amazing online art museum! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you so much for your support of the Visual Art Program at MMES!
