RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT
Need a Plan? We Can Help!
What is a Data Management Plan, or DMP? DMPs are short documents that communicate your intentions for how you'll manage the data you generate and use, both during your research and at the conclusion of your project. Why do I need a Data Management Plan? More and more funding agencies require data management plans as part of the grant proposal process. But DMPs are also a great way to think strategically about your research before you start gathering data. The questions posed in a typical DMP prompt you to consider things like the size and nature of the files you'll be collecting during your research, how you'll share with colleagues both during and after the project, and methods to keep your research secure. This will save you time in the long run! Can you help me create a Data Management Plan? Of course - to get started, check out our data management guide. Northeastern also participates in the DMPTool project, an interactive service that helps you create DMP templates customized for various funding agencies, with helpful 'plain English' prompts and guiding information. DMPTool contains Northeastern-specific information and sample data management plans. For help or questions, contact Jen Ferguson, our Science and Data Services Librarian.

DATABASE HIGHLIGHTS
NEW PRIMARY SOURCES: China's Tumultuous Past and America's Colonial Heritage
“The Foreign Office Files for China collection offers intimate insights into China’s tumultuous twentieth century. It provides users with access to thousands of documents at their fingertips—all searchable and downloadable. The database should thus be an invaluable resource for research projects on modern China, East Asia, and international relations more generally.”
- Phillip Thai, Assistant Professor, Department of History
"The new Colonial America database from Adam Matthew will provide thousands of documents to faculty and graduate students interested in Colonial America, Early Modern England, and the relationship between the two. The material covers the entire correspondence between the American colonial governments and the Colonial Office in London, and will shed light not only on modes of governance, but also on social movements, economic issues, and political tensions. It is an invaluable resource, and we are lucky to have it."
