We’ll explore different watercolor techniques and experiment with multi-color washes.

Paint from your own images or set up a still life but make sure you are passionate about your subject. It will show in your work!

Some knowledge of watercolor painting will be helpful and drawing skills are even more helpful.

PORTRAITURE:
with Kate Huntington
Guest Instructor
Kate Huntington has been studying portrait painting since the 70’s. In 1992, she started hosting an open weekly portrait painting group that is still very popular today. Besides getting to explore new ideas and techniques of her own, as a result, Kate has developed a keen eye as to producing a solid portrait as well as a good likeness. In this class, Kate will share her approach to painting the portrait by giving a quick demo on the first session, allowing students to watch her put emphasis on her strong drawing skills while building up color. Students will then work on their own pieces while Kate gives one on one attention to each individual. Rather then teaching formulas, Kate will be teaching each student how to learn to see better to improve his or her portrait rendering skills. Students are free to work with whatever medium they choose. We’ll be working with a different model every week.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio.

Class Fee:
$100 + $40 model fee = $140
Materials :  Kate works in oils but students are welcome to bring their medium of choice. Emphasis will be on drawing and form rather than magic formulas. It is suggested that students bring at least a warm and cool of each primary color, and some white.

Mondays, Sept 17 - Dec 3
1-4pm, no class 10/8, 11/12

The Blank Slate:
with Nickerson Miles
In the process of creating, who or what moves you? How do you flesh out your ideas? How do you settle on subjects from which to create a particular body of work? How do you define (and refine) your style? When you encounter a creative block, how do you push yourself through it? In this seminar-style class we’ll be examining these questions—and many more—through discussions with key Art Club members. Each week, two noted PAC artists working in a particular medium (oil, acrylic, watercolor, printmaking, glass and other media) will present and discuss their work and the creative process they follow. Our intent is draw on Salvador Dali’s advice: “A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.”

Here are some of the artists Nick will be talking with: Harley Bartlett, Michael Rich, Del-Bourree Bach, Michele Poirier-Mozzone, Susan Dansereau, Angel Dean, William Heydt, Bill Lane, Lisa Goddard, Alice Gebhart, Kathrine Lovell, Nina Briggs, and others!

Location: Maxwell Mays Gallery

About the instructor: A photographer by avocation for 50 years, Nick has taught photojournalism at the university level and exhibited his work at various shows and galleries. WHITE LINE / BLACK LINE PRINT:
with Brian Larkin
The White line or “Provincetown Print” was invented around 1914 by Provincetown artists who were devoted to the reinvention and simplification of the Japanese woodblock. This watercolor print is considered one of the only true American art forms besides Jazz. The print is made with a block of wood, a knife, a spoon and watercolor paints. Because of the hand rubbed process, now two prints are the same. The technique has been passed down by individuals through generations. Brian Larkin studied the method with Kathy Smith in Provincetown, who learned it from her grandmother, Ferol Sibley Warthen. She learned the technique from Blanche Lazzell, one of original practitioners and unquestionably, the most famous of the practitioners. Brian Larkin developed a method allowing the artist to use black paper to achieve more dramatic effects, now known as the “black line print.” White and black line prints are highly sought after and are in the collections of individuals and museums all over the world. This course will embrace the process AND the culture of Provincetown with an ongoing (week to week) commentary of the historical art and literary figures who ultimately shaped much of the American art movement.

Location: Print Studio.

Class Fee: $100
Brian Larkin finds his muse in Provincetown, and the nearby dunes of the outer reaches of Cape Cod. He works in a variety of styles and techniques from traditional oils to hybrid combinations of media that stretch the limits of what a given medium can and should do. His specialty is the white line Provincetown print and his signature “black” line style. He has been represented by Cortile Gallery, Provincetown almost since its inception.
Wednesdays, Sept 19 - Dec 5
1-4pm, no class 10/10, 11/21
PAINTING CHALLENGE: 50 Paintings in Ten Weeks:
with Kathrine Lovell
T he focus of this class will be on creating a lot of small paintings on paper. No painting will be larger than 5 x 7 inches. Painting on paper has been a tradition with painters for a long time. It is a surface that allows artists to work out an idea without committing to a larger, more precious surface, it makes mistakes less daunting, and allows a particular freedom for all levels of painting skill. Each week we will create a small group of these paintings, while learning about a variety of building block topics, such as color, composition, mood, balance, tension.

Every painter who is trying to master his or her craft should make plenty of paintings.

Location: Print Studio.

Class Fee: $100
This class will be a lighthearted, yet determined and thought provoking means to creating more of those paintings. Lessons will be taught in acrylics, however, students are encouraged to use gouache or watercolor if they prefer.
Wednesdays, Sept 19 - Dec 5
4:30-6:30pm, no class 10/10, 11/21

DESIGN & CREATE A PHOTO BOOK:
with Karen Murtha
Like so many, we all have loads of photos languishing on our computer or on our phones. Adobe Photoshop is a terrific and useful application to address this! Students will be exposed to the abilities of what it can do by helping with overall image refinement and exploration through imagination. Using these skills and the possibilities learned with the Photoshop tools, the student will have the opportunity to create a collection of their best images and compile them to create a unique, personalized book.

It will be the student’s choice for their story, theme or collection of images. You will first search through all your photos and put together and organize a file of the images you will use, adding or subtracting as you go along. Then we will start a story board or simple layout for your story and the pages.

After deciding the best photos to use we will then explore the tools of Adobe Photoshop; focusing on developing the language and skills to adjust and edit these choice images. This will include cropping, contrast, exposure, color adjustment and enhancement. Also studying the finer points of layering, abstracting and manipulation and learning to take out or add, objects and people in your photos.
With this new knowledge, the student will work to refine the layout for each page of their collection.

Location: Print Studio
Class Fee: $100
Materials :   Students will need a laptop or computer with the Adobe Photoshop application. All the Adobe creative applications are now downloaded from the cloud. Adobe Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud) may be downloaded free for 1 month to try. If you decide to keep, Adobe charges $9.99 per month for the application. All former versions of Adobe Photoshop CS (Creative Suite) are perfectly fine and have the same interface. Photoshop Elements has a a little different interface but most of all the necessary tools are included and will be still easy to follow along. A link to all the sites where you can purchase one of the applications will be provided.
Fridays, Sept 21 - Dec 7
1-4pm, no class 10/12, 11/23
