The Sunlight Fall Festival is Coming
October 28 - 3 pm - 7 pm
Mark your calendars now and plan to be at this event. You can sign up for Trunk or Treat and bring goodies for the kids.  You can help with games, food, welcoming! We will have flyers to pass out this Sunday in church so you can invite your friends and neighbors to join us for a fun event. We would also like to spread some flyers through the neighborhoods near church if you can help with that.

A small part of Colfax St. in Denver, CO
Jesus on Colfax
This week I got to spend time with my  friend  Shawn Sikkema. Shawn and his wife work with a team of folks to bring the light of God's grace to the "least of these". They live in a run down, dirty hotel in a rough part of urban Denver.  Most of us would never dream of spending a night in such a seedy hotel; Shawn and his wife live there.  Their closest friends are prostitutes, addicts and drug dealers. The kind of folks the rest of the city is trying to get rid of.  Shawn dreams of building a community centered around the grace of Jesus Christ in the midst of this brokenness.  They go out onto the streets, streets that are filled with more hotels just like the one they live in. They bring small things that folks might need but more than anything they bring friendship.  Most of the other ministries to folks in their neighborhood are a quick in and out.  They bring food, clothes and other helpful things but then they leave and they often don't have a lasting impact in the lives of the people.

Shawn and his wife, Diane build long-term relationships. This past Tuesday they were out doing ministry and ran into an old friend they hadn't seen in a while, a drug dealer.  They were so happy to see each other. They hugged and as one of Shawn's team offered to pray for him this drug dealer said, "No, let me pray for you." Here was a guy living far from God but he met some folks that genuinely cared for him and he wanted to do something for them.  Maybe someday soon, by the grace of God, there will be one less dealer  on the  street and one more committed disciple in the Kingdom!

It did my heart good to hear Shawn share glimpses of Jesus on Colfax Street.  It was moving to hear of his dreams for beautiful, Christ-centered community in the midst of a neighborhood most people speed through and pray for safety.  Lake Worth has its share of brokenness too.  We don't have to drive far to see some seedy hotels.  We see prostitutes on the street and we have drug deals going down in the park across the street from our church.  We have poverty and pain in abundance.  How can we dream beautiful dreams for our community?  We have an amazing mix of brightness and darkness in our city.  I pray that we can bring the Kingdom to the places where we feel most comfortable, but I also pray that we can bring the Kingdom to the places that push us out of our comfort zones too. Let's pray for God's Spirit to move us into the places that He wants us to be.
