We are so grateful to you
for helping us win an eBay SHINE Award!

Thanks to your votes, Community Forklift and our CEO Nancy J. Meyer have won eBay's 2017 Charitable Business Award.

So many people shared their love for us this summer, and lots of you told us you voted every day.  Our staff and volunteers work hard to lift up our community through reuse - so it feels terrific to know that our work is appreciated!

The SHINE Awards, sponsored by USPS, is a seller recognition program that recognizes the entrepreneurs who have used eBay to help build successful businesses.  As the winner of the Charitable Business Award, we've received $5,000 and valuable assistance with improving our  eBay shop.  They've created a great professional  video for us too:

This is already helping us reach a larger audience, which means we can do more good here in the DC region!  We can keep  more materials out of landfills, provide more  free materials to  neighbors in need, and offer more  green jobs to local residents.

We're so happy - thank you, Forklift Fans!

Forklift In The News
Thanks to your votes,
everyone is talking about us

After your votes took us to the finals of the eBay SHINE contest, we had an excuse to reach out to lots of reporters.  It led to fantastic articles in the  Washington Post and the  Hyattsville Life & Times.

If you follow us on social media, you may have heard about that... but I bet you didn't know that the Post story also ran in the  Chicago Daily Herald and the  Napa Valley Register!

Mariam D'Eustachio, our Director of Administration, had a fun  radio interview with  eBay Radio, and television reporters learned about us from the eBay win too!

Arash Arabadi did a  piece for Voice of America.  In the video, you'll see donations staffers Chris and Nordaine and our intrepid leader Nancy, as well as several of our partners:  Willis DeHart of Think Make Build (generous donors of materials), deconstruction staff from Brick and Board, and the Youth Entrepreneur Institute (a nonprofit that received free materials through our Community Building Blocks program).

Because Voice of America airs around the world as well as the U.S., the story will be translated into multiple languages (Check out the Urdu  version  here - people are tweeting about us in Pakistan right now).

Maryland Public Television reporter Nancy Yamada Zarroli also came to visit.   Forklift Fan Cliff Wright and other customers did a great job when she interviewed them!  As always, our vintage plumbing guy Matt Menke proved to be a wry comedian.  The  piece  just aired on Sept. 28th on the  Your Money & Business show.

We've also had some love from the blogosphere.  Roshani Kothari is a green realtor who featured us on  Green Living DC back in April, and then mentioned us in a Sept. 24th article about a green renovation.   Both stories were then shared on the Petworth News blog, a very active community blog. Thanks, Roshani!

We are so thankful to these reporters - and to all of YOU who spread the word about Community Forklift to your neighbors when they renovate!

Sharing the Light

As part of our eBay SHINE award, Mariam D'Eustachio, our Director of Administration, was invited to Las Vegas for the eBay Open conference.

Mariam (far left) and other finalists

For Mariam, one of the best things about the experience was meeting folks other small businesses.  So when she heard some of the finalists were coming together for a good cause, she wanted to help too.

Laurie Wong, the 2016 Winner of the SHINE Awards for Small Business, runs the eBay store Reflections of Trinity. The eBay store funds a community resource center and food pantry in Atlanta.   Recently, two major retailers offered to donate an ongoing supply of food  if Laurie's charity can pick it up 3 times a week with a refrigerated truck.

Reflections of Trinity distributed nearly one million pounds of food to people in need in 2016.

The eBay SHINE winners have set up a GoFundMe campaign, and raised about $6,000 of the $15,000 needed.  In the meantime, the food pantry is renting a truck.  Here at the Forklift, we know all too well how expensive that is - so we'd like to help Laurie buy that truck.  Follow this link to learn more, and please consider a donation of your own.

ReuseContest

Entry Deadline is Oct. 31st

If you completed a project in 2017 using secondhand or salvaged materials, take some pictures and send them in by the end of this month.  If your project is selected by the judges, you'll win a t-shirt and gift certificate for the Forklift - and bragging rights, of course!

There are two categories:  Arts & Furniture, and Construction & Remodeling.  The salvaged materials can come from anywhere (they don't have to be from the 'Lift).   Visit our website for the

For the last four years, we've had Forklift Fans win at the national level and receive gift certificates worth up to $1,000.  We've seen folks submit everything from a beautiful parakeet home to an emergency basement remodel.  Check out our past  national winners to get inspired!

TinyHouse
Lend some space (or advice)
for some Tiny House dreamers?

Sarah and Jeff Lyle are a DC couple looking for a space to pursue their dream of building a tiny home from salvaged materials. Whether it is a industrial lot, large land, or old warehouse, they just need a small work space to start and finish construction.

Because they are enthusiastic Forklift Fans and will be using a lot of reclaimed supplies, they asked if we could spare some space - but our courtyard is already cramped with materials thanks to all the great publicity this summer!  So we thought we'd turn it over to our awesome community:

Do you know of any low-cost space they could use while they build?

Any help is much appreciated!  If you have space or ideas, please contact Jeff directly, or call Ruthie on our Outreach Team at 301-985-5180.
