Fall for Emrys with Our Slam-Full Calendar!
|
Of course you’ve read
A Movable Feast
. But what’s that got to do with
Emrys
? No
t much, really, except that with so much going on in so many different venues all over town, you’d think the book’s about Emrys’s action-packed Fall calendar.

Because Writing’s So Freaking Funny
|
We put the FUN in FUNraiser! What’s better than roasting a bunch of writerlytypes? Why, inviting the best roasters in town, that’s what—all to help Emrys raise money to keep our movable feast of contests, scholarships andother super-cool programs going.
The gut-busting stars of Café and Then Some, Mary Louise Earl McDaniel Hampton Pinckney and Veranda Bannister, perform roasts better than anybody, and from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, they’ll put some serious burn on Emrys Foundation Board members—all in good-natured fun(raising), of course.
Tickets to this once-in-a-lifetime public-humiliation event at Velo Fellow, 1 Augusta St., are $35 because Emrys is 35 years old this year (aren’t we clever that way?). Velo Fellow’s menu is really fun, too, and they’ve installed a craft-beer brewery where the party is in their divine backroom.

Press Here for Poetry Prize Winner

Quick quiz: What’s a chapbook? (Hint: It’s not related to lip balm, although, Emrys does pay more than lip service our mission of wordsmithing; we actually pay our contest winners.)
Jacob’s from Chicago, which tells you how nationally famous Emrys’s contests are. While submitting poems a whole mess of contests and magazines, our renowned judge, Heather McHugh, picked his work from an enormous pool of entries from all over the world. His prizewinner,
Stilt House
, will be published in December, in time for your perfect stocking stuffer.
“I just feel incredibly lucky,” he says. “My correspondence with the people at Emrys makes me think that I could not have landed at a more capable and welcoming press.”
And we welcome you to enter your poems for our esteemed chapbook. (As for what a chapbook actually is, well, that’s why we have Google.)

Read Up Greenville

here
. Meantime, of course, Emrys is involved.
We not only sponsored a contest for writers ages 10 to 18,we’re also sponsoring one of the guest writers.
Tiffany D. Jackson
, award-winning YA author of
Allegedly
and
Monday’s Not Coming
, will be among two dozen national scribes on hand at ReadUp. And in conjunction with Fiction Addiction, we’re also bringing her to Sterling Community Center, 113 Minus St., where we’ll give away 40 copies of her books to Greenville High School attendees.

Laurence O’Dwyer is like nobody you’ve (probably) ever met. He’s an ultra-marathoner—he runs races that are, like, 12 hours long—and he’s hyper-educated and he’s Irish, he's a
scientist and
he’s an internationally known poet. Better yet, he’s going to be our featured speaker at our
Open Mic on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Chicora Alley, 608 S. Main St
., where our readings are always mind-blowing and the nachos are to-die-for.
|
|
Believe it or not, our contests also support our scholarships. Oh, and we might have mentioned prizes. Now you have the entire month of November to submit up to three poems, no more than three pages total, to our poetry contest. The winnerreceives a $250 honorarium and publication in the Emrys Journal. Submit
here
from November 1st to 30th
.

Yes, we have our very own space! Emrys now calls 201 W. Stone Ave. home with a clean, well-lighted place (thanks, Papa!). We still need a coffee machine (anybody?), but it’s perfect for our Writing Room workshops and even our December drop-in; more about that when we get closer to the date.

And That’s Not All …......
|
Emrys plays host to Reading Rooms at Velo Fellow to showcase published authors and two Open Mics: Chicora Alley on the first Tuesday of every month and at Joe’s Place, 2 Williams St., on the third Wednesday of each month. Our monthly Pop-Up, a wild and wacky exercise for those who prefer a creativity workout without the sweat, takes place just before the Joe’s Place Open Mic. These events are free and open to the public!
