BEACON PLACE NEWS
Beacon Kids Go Back to School!

School has started for the kids of the Beacon Place community! To help them get a great start, all kids who attended the last day of our Summer Lunch Bunch Program received a backpack stuffed with a set of basic school supplies. The children and parents who were the most active in our summer programs were invited to participate in a feedback project to help us improve our efforts next summer. In return for offering feedback, each participating student received a voucher for a new school uniform (required in all elementary schools in North Chicago and Waukegan).

Our support of these bright young minds continues throughout the year. Our Afterschool Kids Club will begin on September 15th and will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30-5:00 at Carman Buckner School, located right across the street from Beacon Place. We are in need of adult and teen tutors to work with our kids. If you'd like to help, please contact us at [email protected].
Summer by the Numbers!

We had a busy summer at Beacon Place! A record numbers of kids attended, and parents and families became more involved and were able to experience the program alongside their children.  There were many meals, stories, and laughs shared throughout these past three months. Here's a look at our summer program by the numbers:

9 week program
460 different kids
225 different families

3,500 lunches served

2,400 backpacks of food sent home

220 volunteers and more than 3,100 hours dedicated

Teen volunteers from 20 different high schools

13 college interns

Take a look at this video of the Summer Lunch Bunch Program that was created by one of our teen volunteers this summer! The smiles and happy faces tell the story of the lives that were changed because of the programs offered through the Beacon Place Community Center. Thanks to all for making it happen! Renovation Update

Renovation work continues to transform our 102-year-old house into a wonderful new space for learning, meeting and working!

As with many remodeling projects, some unexpected surprises have recently caused the project to expand both in scope and expense. We are actively working to raise funds to complete Phase 1 (interior basement, first, and second floors) and begin Phase 2 (interior third floor, exterior and garage). Please consider helping us move toward our goal with a financial donation. Click Here to donate!

If you would like to underwrite part of our construction please contact Barb Karacic at [email protected]

Beacon Place Mom's Group
The Moms Group, meeting under the shade tree and learning about safety from the Waukegan Police Department.

Beacon Place is not just for kids! A number of moms, dads, grandmas and neighbors come through our doors as well!

This summer, more than 75 different women attended our Moms Group that met each Monday and Thursday during the Summer Lunch Bunch Program. These women, of all different ages and races, came together out of a desire to use the support they receive at Beacon Place to help themselves and their families.

The weekly program included informal english as a second language (ESL) work, as well as exposure to guest speakers. These speakers discussed relevant topics such as crime and safety (sponsored by the Waukegan Police Department and A Safe Place), nutrition and health (Rosalind Franklin University), financial management and saving (Wintrust Bank), emotional health of parents and kids (Arden Shore), understanding the education system (Waukegan Pubic Schools), and so much more.

The overarching theme of "I CAN!" was always present to emphasize self confidence. In the beginning of the program, the women made special bracelets with heart-shaped beads symbolizing their love, and their commitment to bring their children to Beacon Place. Throughout the summer, each time a new accomplishment was achieved, a new bead was added to the bracelet.

On the last day, each of the women shared what each bead represented. Their powerful statements reflected what they have learned and how they have grown through the support that they have found at Beacon Place.

"I can play with my kids without needing to spend money."

"I can speak some English without feeling embarrassed."

"I can learn a lot from the others."

"I can learn to cook and eat in a more healthy way."

"I can recommend Beacon Place programs to other families as a safe place to bring

             their kids."

           "I can make new friends."

"I can value myself as a woman and mother."

At Beacon Place, we value each individual and guide them to see their own opportunity and potential. Congratulations to all of our wonderful Moms for recognizing that "They Can!"

The Mom's Group will continue to meet throughout the school year. Their meetings will be held at Arden Shore in Waukegan until interior renovations are complete.

Growing with Beacon Place

When 200 kids show up for lunch and fun every Monday and Thursday, volunteer Jacky is one of the amazing teens who makes everything work so smoothly!

Jacky lives across the street from Beacon Place with her parents and two younger sisters, and has truly found a second home at Beacon Place. Last year, she came to our Summer Lunch Bunch Program, and continued her involvement through the year two days a week at our Afterschool Homework Club. With the help of Beacon Place, Jacky worked hard and finished 8th grade on time and with good grades!

"I feel strong and confident at Beacon Place. I can totally be myself, no one judges me and lots of people depend on me. I am so glad that Beacon Place is my neighborhood!" -Jacky

Jacky has grown into a responsible young teenager that we depend on in so many ways as a volunteer. She helps with registration, comes early to set up, and has become an important part of our Wednesday Tweens and Teens Program. Thank you Jacky!

A Message from Barb, Beacon Place Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Summer has come and gone once again.  This second summer at Beacon Place was a special one in many ways. We had beautiful weather, made great friends with volunteers and neighbors, developed new programs and established new relationships with caring businesses and individuals. Our moms were regular attendees under the shade tree and helped in many ways. The Walkathon was their gift back to Beacon Place - a wonderful way to show their appreciation. We could not have had such a positive experience without their help.

Working together with the community is key to our success as an organization. We are here to provide structure and support, to listen, and to have some fun. Our work continues this fall. Please keep in touch with us via Facebook, our website, email or a phone call as we move into the fall season. There is much work to be done.

My best,

Barb Karacic
