YOUTH CONNECTIONS

2017
Dear Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods Supporter:
http://givebgc.org/
Winter is fast approaching and that means cold weather! We are starting to prepare to keep your youth warm. We have the pleasure in work with Katy Dutton Boham from Benchmark Realty Group again this year to collect new and gently used coats. Last year, we distributed over 200 coats to our members and their siblings. As you shop online or in store to purchase your new winter wear this year, please think of a local child and get an extra coat.

MemorableMoments

Official Klamath Charter

We are so excited that our Klamath Teen Center site is now officially chartered with Boys & Girls Club of America! We are one of the only Native American Boys & Girls Club sites in the entire state of California, and we are incredibly happy to be working alongside the Yurok Tribe and the Klamath community to be reaching the youth that need us most in Klamath and the surrounding communities. Our Klamath site is open for teens, grades 6-12, Monday through Friday.

Joyful Noise! Music Camp Fundraiser

We had a fantastic turn out for the first fundraiser for our Joyful Noise! Music Camp program! Three days a week, our Clubhouse members have been able to participate in this music program at Calvary Lutheran Church with music director Melissa Gussin, learning about rhythm, various musical instruments, and how to read music. The first fundraiser featured a silent auction and musical performances from Bandemonium, Constellations, the Black Batons, and, of course, our very own Clubhouse music camp members! Members performed a full song with shakers, drums, dancing and singing, as well as a recorder performance.

Teen Court Jury and Attorney Training

Our Teen Court is up in full force. In October, six l eaders attended our orientation to start up the new school year. We surveyed their interests to allow them to shape the focus of their activities for the coming year. We are excited to work with a new batch of leaders and watch their skills grow. We have also trained 2 new student attorneys. They have now already handled two cases in the month of October!

New Executive Director Orientation    Forum I

Monica Rose, Executive Director for the Club joined 23 other new Executive Directors from across the nation in Atlanta, Georgia last month. Seven different National BGCA Staff lead different sessions that included everything from Human Resources, Financial Management, and Board Building.  Featured in this photo is BGCA President and CPO Jim Clark and Monica Rose.

National Fitness Competition

This years National Fitness Competition was a complete success! Each spring and fall, the Club hosts Fitness Competitions to encourage members of all ages to embrace a positive, competitive spirit that challenges them to reach new heights of physical activity. Each activity also challenges youth to compete against themselves, which helps to inspire self-motivation. This year, both the Eureka Teen Center, and Eureka Clubhouse hosted their own National Fitness Competition, with over 75 members participating.
Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week  is an alcohol, tobacco, and other  drug  and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October. This year, our teens participated in Red Ribbon Week, October 23rd-27th, by answering trivia about the effects of alcohol and drugs, watching educational videos, and playing different online games relating to the abuse and effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Members who showed up wearing red even earned a special prize!

Bead It Up:
Teaching
 Heritage through Art

Bead It Up is one of our newest programs, implemented at our Teen Center in Klamath.  This program aims to teach members not only about art, but also about their culture and heritage in Klamath. This program, along with Throwback, a program about Klamath, Del Norte, and Yurok culture and history, are two programs specific to our Klamath Teen Center, so members are able to delve into the unique and wonderful culture that surrounds them. Currently in Bead It Up, members are making their own necklaces and bracelets with their own creative designs. In the future, they plan on working to make and earn their own traditional regalia.

Great Gifts, Great Futures

This holiday season is fast approaching, and while this time of year can be filled with turkey, presents, and family time, for many of our youth and their families, this time of year can be incredibly difficult. Here at the Boys & Girls Club, we strive to make sure that our members feel safe and supported during the holidays, in and out of Club. In order to make this happen, we are looking for donations, both for our families and our sites. If you would like to make a donation, you can visit our Amazon Wishlist or contact our Administrative Assistant Amber Larson at [email protected] or (707)-441-1030.

Eureka Teen Center Member of the Month:
Ne'vaeh West

Ne'vaeh has set a great example for the other members by actively participating in multiple programs including Girl Space, Power Hour, Cooking Club, Gardening, and Keystone. She also shows great ambition in achieving what she wants, whether it's winning  Thursday  night trivia, or helping her fellow members during Power Hour. Way to go Ne'vaeh!

The Judgement Free Generation

This October, Boys & Girls Clubs of America partnered with Planet Fitness to promote a Judgement Free Generation, by spreading kindness to end bullying. At the Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods, we took to YouTube to show that everyone belongs here.
