Did you know that there are more "good days" for planting in Fall, than in the Spring? The weather is more predictable, the soils are warmer for the plants to take root more quickly, and this time of year is less stressful on plants to thrive. New plantings require less water in the Fall, and most often will come in more robust next Spring when planted now. It's also easier to see where plants should be added into the landscape at this time of the season. An added bonus: many perennials, shrubs and trees are on sale right now. Don't forget to plant garlic now for next season!
Looking for a little guidance about good perennial, shrub and tree choices, or about interesting Fall bulbs for Spring blooms?
Join Heidi this Saturday, September 9th, from 10:00 - Noon at GrowHaus for a Free Perennial and Fall bulb Seminar and Walk-about. She will share her latest tips and tricks for successful Fall planting!

Fall Garden Tips for the Sustainable Garden
|
There are many things you can do in Fall to improve your garden's health and appearance. Here are a few pointers for Fall chores with a sustainability mindset:
Divide and transplant perennials now, since you can see best what needs re-arranging in the garden.
Consider the "chop and drop" method: Leave the perennial cuttings in place, where they will break down to provide nutrients to the garden bed.
Recycle tubers, tropical and houseplants that are outside by digging them up before a frost. Cut back the foliage on tropical plants, leaving the main stem. Water sparingly monthly, then plant again in the Spring.
Plant Fall bulbs for Spring blooms
Plant Tulip, Daffodil, Allium, and Hyacinth bulbs now. It's easy to do, and will be worth the effort in Spring!
Plant any type of Spring blooming bulb at a depth twice its height. Place bone meal or other bulb food at the bottom of the hole. Cover with chicken wire or sprinkle cayenne pepper on to the soil to discourage the squirrels.
Be sure to continue watering your gardens and landscape throughout the Fall season. For more Fall gardening tips,

Plant of the Month: Medinilla Myriantha
|
Also known as a Malaysian Orchid, this gorgeous tropical features beautiful pink clusters (called panicles) that turn to a deep rose color, before yielding a purple berry. It is not a true orchid, but rather a "semi-ephiphyte", which means it uses both the air and its preferred loose soils for its nutrients.
Enjoy it now outdoors, then bring it in as a houseplant (and a stunning centerpiece) until next season! All Tropicals are 50% off now!
