Message from our Executive Director
Last week, the Minister responsible for addressing homelessness, Caroline Cochrane, brought a wide variety of stakeholders together for a two day think tank on solutions.  We heard the full scope of the problem, including the enormous stress homeless individuals place on our hospital and ambulance services.  Not necessarily because they are ill, but because we have no better solution to the social problems of exclusion, racism, and trauma.

The YWCA works every day to address homelessness for families.  Other social agencies do the same for the people included by their mandate.  But social agencies are struggling too, with the volume of requests for help.  The City of Yellowknife, through the Community Advisory Board on Homelessness (CAB) has issued a request for proposals for a Housing First project.  Housing First, as a model to address the needs of homeless people, has been rigorously tested over five years in five Canadian cities and proven to be effective.  But it takes a bit of up-front funding in order to reap savings in emergency services down the road.  Let's hope that we can find a way to do that.

Diana's Closet Toiletry Drive - all the month of May!
Food or shampoo? Some women have to make that choice. Help us by donating toiletries or holding a drive at your school or workplace.

Women and children often arrive at our family violence shelters with little but the clothes on their backs. Likewise, families staying at our emergency or transitional housing often don't have money for personal toiletries after paying for groceries and rent. This May, donate personal products to help people feel good about themselves.
Products needed: Shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, toothpaste/toothbrushes, combs/brushes, diapers, men's and women's shave cream, baby powder and diaper cream, and more.
Drop off locations: Sutherland's Drugs, Weaver & Devore, YWCA office (4904-54 Ave)
Contact us at giving@ywcanwt.ca if you'd like posters for your workplace, school, or to arrange pickup of a large toiletry donation.
