TIPS

SBU Family's Guide to FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) gives families certain rights with respect to their student’s educational records. However, these rights transfer to the student when they reach the age of 18. Thus, SUNY Stony Brook University is prohibited from disclosing student educational records (even to a parent).

While the University views families as partners in their student’s education, we must adhere to the FERPA guidelines and, by law, cannot share information about your student’s records with third parties without the student’s consent. We understand this may bring frustration, but this is a great opportunity for your student to learn skills in self-advocacy!

Below are some tips to help your family navigate FERPA:
  • Communicate with your student about your expectations and needs as their main support system. Remaining transparent will ease the transition!
  • With the consent of your student, you may request a FERPA waiver for your student's schedule, enrollment status, credits earned, and declared major and minor. Students may revoke these privileges at any time.
  • Stay informed! Review the policy with your student and revisit the expectations and implications these guidelines may bring.
