TIPS
Navigating Changes to the 2017-2018 FAFSA Application
If your student has applied for financial aid at Stony Brook University, then this is a must read! You may or may not have heard about Prior-Prior Year, but there are some important changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that you and your student need to know about. Beginning with the 2017-2018 FAFSA, keep the following in mind:
- The application is available now. Instead of waiting until January 1st, the 2017-2018 FAFSA became available October 1st. When you log onto www.fafsa.ed.gov, you will see both the current year application and the opportunity to complete the application that will be used for next year. If your student is making any changes/corrections to the application, be sure to select the correct application you intend to make changes to.
- The tax information needed to complete the 2017-2018 FAFSA is the same 2015 tax information you used to complete your 2016-2017 FAFSA. Even though the same tax information is being used, to be considered for federal aid to cover Summer 2017-Spring 2018, you must complete the 2017-2018 FAFSA.
- Stony Brook’s priority filing deadline for continuing students has shifted from May 1st to February 15th. To be considered for campus based aid programs, including Federal Work Study and the Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), you must file the application by this priority deadline.
The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services has already begun processing 2017-2018 applications. Be sure to encourage your student to check their SOLAR To Do list for any request for additional information! For more information regarding the application process for Federal Financial aid, please visit: http://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/finaid/applying/federal.html.
As always, if you have any questions please contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services.
