Hike Leaders: Tom and Sally Colkett
Hike Location: Tesnatee Gap to Cow Rock Mountain (Appalachian Trail Section)
Outing Description: This is an easy to moderate short hike that we think will be fun for families with children. It is steep, but only 1.9 miles round trip. We will take whatever time is needed to accommodate your (or your child's) speed. Taking a leisurely pace, we'll stop to identify plants, trees, birds, etc., as well as to enjoy some views along the way. The top of the mountain provides beautiful views to the East and South and, on a clear day, includes views all the way to Atlanta! We will have lunch at the top, enjoying the views and exploring the area before returning slowly to the cars when everyone is ready. Bring your children!
Hike Date: Saturday, September 16th, 2017
Meeting Time, Place and Directions:
We will meet at 9:00am at the parking lot at Tesnatee Gap. (Google Map link
Directions from the South: Take Highway 400 north to the end, where it changes to GA 115. Continue on 115 until you reach the traffic light at the intersection of GA 52. Turn right on GA 115/52 and continue approximately 11.5 miles to Tesnatee Gap Valley Road. Turn left on Tesnatee Gap Valley Road and follow to the T-intersection at US 129. Turn left on 129 for 8/10 mile to GA 75-Alt. Turn right on GA 75A and continue for 5.9 miles. Just after the turnoff to Smithgall Woods, turn left on GA 348 (Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway) and drive 7.6 miles to unpaved parking lot on the left. Please allow plenty of time for your drive, as some of these roads, especially GA-348 are very twisty mountain roads!
