27-No School Staff Day
From Interim Principal Rice
Jefferson Community,

February created a month of mixed emotions. Our thoughts are with the families in Florida as they work through the tragedy they had to face. We mourned with them and honored their lives by celebrating the success of our students at Jefferson. Black Student Union put together an incredible opportunity for us to learn more of our history. Students competed in Battle of the Books, Oratorical Contest, Solo and Ensemble, and the list goes on. It is inspiring to the see the drive, ambition, and desire for good!

In light of the happenings in our country, we have revisited our security plan at Jefferson. In the past, all the doors have been open in the morning for drop off. We have now only open the main office door and the door directly across from it on the Memorial side of the building. The reason for the change is because we only want doors unlocked that are being actively supervised by an adult. When students return from classes at Memorial, there is an adult at the door actively supervising again. We want to make sure we know who is coming in and out of our building. Students are being reminded to not open doors for anyone even if they know the person. During the school day, visitors need to come to the main office door which is on the Lussier side of the building. The secretaries will be monitoring the cameras and buzzing people into the building. Visitors will need to sign in and wear a name badge. Parents who are wanting to visit classrooms need to prearrange the visit with teachers and the office. I know this may be inconvenient, but our first priority is to ensure the safety of our students and staff. We really appreciate your help and support!

As always, if you have any thoughts or concerns please feel free to reach out via email or phone. I appreciate your thoughts and support.

Kind regards,
Katie Rice

Otros estudiantes participaron en concursos “Battle of the Books”, “Oratorical Contest”, “Solo and Ensemble” y muchos más.

Sinceramente,
Katie Rice

Picking Students Up After School

To ensure the safety of all students, there is no pick up of students on the north side of Jefferson (Lussier side). Students must be picked up on the south side of the building (Memorial side). This only applies to the end of the day dismissal. If you are picking up your student for an appointment during the day, please use our new office entrance on the north side. Thank you helping us.

Celebrations
Optimist Oratorical Contest

On March 1, at Jefferson Middle School, Madison’s Optimist Club held their annual Optimist Oratorical Contest. Nine Jefferson students, representing each grade level, courageously presented their speech to a packed house of parents, friends, Optimist Club members, and several member of Jefferson’s staff, including Principal Katrina Rice. With direction from Optimist Club members, lead by Dan Hassl, the students worked for weeks to plan, write and practice their 4 to 5 minute speech. They not only worked on the content of their speech, but on oratorical strategies and techniques. Members of Memorial’s Forensic Club judged the students to determine the top three place winners. Students wrote their speech based on this year’s theme: Where are my roots of optimism?

The consensus by the judges, as well as the audience, was that each participant performed at an extremely high level, and the judges had their work cut-out for them. Students shared inspiring stories about their families, and the process of emigrating from their home country to the United States. For instance, Lileah mentioned her grandfather as a root for her optimism as he survived the horrific Vietnam War to emigrate first to Thailand and then to the US. MJ rooted her optimism in nature, and the chickens she raised, especially Rosie. Varun drew his optimism from his dad, whose motto is: If you don’t think you can do, just remember, you’ve done it before. These are just a few tidbits from last night’s speeches. One of the parents remarked that he was now more optimistic about our future after having heard these inspiring speeches. In the end, the judges had to make a decision and the top three place winners were:

First Place: MJ Bauer ($500 scholarship fund)
Second Place: Varun Nathan (Barnes & Nobles gift certificate)
Third Place: Tanmayi Golkonda (Barnes & Nobles gift certificate)

The judges encouraged all the participants to join the Forensic Club at Memorial when they arrive as 9th graders. The Jefferson Community is so proud of our Oratorical participants: Congratulations to all!

Optimist Oratorical Contest Participants (from left to right): MJ Bauer, Emmie Digon, Qing Ng, Lileah Thao, Tanmayi Golkonda, Sophia Jiang, Emma Mayhew, Varun Nathan, Jake Kennedy.
Behavior Education Plan (BEP) Updates
Throughout January Mrs. Lodholz and myself went into every homeroom and reminded the students about the requirements in the BEP. We focused on the fact that we are a "Respectful, Responsible, and Safe" school. In order to achieve this, all students have to work together. In addition to the list below, we reminded students to keep hands and feet to themselves. Play fighting is still fighting and will be treated as such. Also, we reminded students to walk in the halls and to make sure they are under control so they do not accidentally hurt anyone. Please let us know if you have any questions or if your student reports anything to you regarding safety concerns.

-We have an "Off and Away" policy during the day for cell phones. Please remind your students to be off their phones during the day and focus on learning.
-It is against District policy for any videos or pictures to be taken on electronic devices without the permission of the school.
-Now that we have snow on the ground, please remind your students to not throw snow. It is a safety issue for students that comes with serious consequences.

Assessment News
-We are gearing up for the Forward Testing. It will be begin after Spring Break!
Social Media
Media Corner
There are so many different social media sites, it is often difficult to keep track of which sites are safe or age appropriate for your student.  The website, www.commonsensemedia.org has helpful information and a link listed below for your review.

What are the basics my kid needs to know about social media?
Social media is a variety of tools and methods for interacting and communicating with others online. Some popular social media tools include Twitter , Instagram , Facebook , and Snapchat , and each of these offers a different way to share information, connect with friends, or collaborate. For many users of social media, online and offline social life is one and the same and includes similar highs and lows. What's really unique about social media is how it can enable users to instantly reach a wide audience, giving kids an opportunity to magnify their lives in a way that's different from the offline experience.
