From Interim Principal Rice

Jefferson Community,
I cannot believe we are almost at the end of the school year already. It has been great year at Jefferson and I'm so proud of the work the students have accomplished and will continue accomplish as we work through the remaining weeks of the school year.
Over the past couple of weeks, I have had the privilege of working with Dr. Tequila Kurth as she prepares to take the Principal role for the 2018-2019 school year. I have no doubt that she will be a strong asset to the Jefferson community and will continue to make Jefferson great! Keep your eyes open because an announcement will come out in the near future with a date and time for you to meet Dr. Kurth and see for yourself how great she is!
During this last month of school we have a lot planned! Please keep an eye out for permission slips for field trips. Also, the music ensembles have their final concerts at the Memorial Auditorium. We are also doing the Pink Days of May on Fridays. This is a fundraiser where all proceeds will be donated for cancer research! May 9th is our final PTO meeting. At this meeting we will have the equipment to translate the meeting into Spanish! As a school we decided to invest in translating equipment in order to best serve our Jefferson families.
Please know how much I have appreciated your support and understanding through our first year together at Jefferson. As we finish the year, please feel free to continue to reach out with any questions, concerns, or thoughts!
Kind regards,
Katie
Saludos cordiales,
Katie

Picking Students Up
After School
To ensure the safety of all students, there is no pick up of students on the north side of Jefferson (Lussier side). Students must be picked up on the south side of the building (Memorial side). This only applies to the end of the day dismissal. If you are picking up your student for an appointment during the day, please use our new office entrance on the north side. Thank you helping us.

Honor an Educator and Support our Students
Our school is filled with great teachers and staff who inspire students to excel every day. The Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools (FMPS) has a great way for you to show your gratitude, and support our school. To thank someone special who has made a difference in your child’s life, we invite you to make a gift to our school endowment in their honor.
A donation to our school endowment is a lasting gift that will help support programs in our school which benefit students and staff. Grants are awarded annually using the investment income generated by our endowment. Recent grants include the following:
·
$925 to establish a student-led club focused on raising mental health awareness
·
$614 to purchase a set of 25 classroom ukuleles for 6th, 7th and 8
th
grade general music students
·
$1,010 to create
a safe space to engage students in social activism in the school and the community through a social just after school program
·
$544 to meet the needs of diverse learners by purchasing interesting and culturally appropriate materials for the Read 180 Library
To express your appreciation, visit
the Foundation’s
website
to make a gift via credit card or send a check, payable to FMPS, to 101 Nob Hill Road, Suite 300, Madison, WI 53713. Please remember to specify our school and the name of the teacher you wish to recognize.
The Foundation will send a personalized letter to the person, noting that a gift has been made in their honor with the amount of the donation omitted.
Every gift to our school endowment creates a lasting legacy that supports today’s students and staff, as well as those who will walk our halls in the future. If you have questions about our school endowment and the programs it supports, you can visit the FMPS website or contact Mary Bartzen at

TJMS participated in the first annual Black Girl Magic Summit on May 2, 2018. Black Girl Magic is a concept that was born as a way to "celebrate the beauty, power and resilience of black women", as described by Julee Wilson from
The Huffington Post
,
[2]
and to congratulate black women on their accomplishments.
Ms. Johnson escorted seven 6th grade students to the summit. The Summit was organized by Hawthorne Elementary School staff for fifth grade and middle school girls. The Summit consisted of several African American women speakers that discussed the importance of knowing your worth, embracing your beauty, and striving for excellence.
Each girl also participated in three different break out sessions with topics including self-esteem building, cyber bullying, sisterhood, cultural identity, spoken word, and entrepreneurship to name a few. TJMS step team also performed for The Summit impromptu.

On April 26, 2018 the sixth graders participated in an experiential learning opportunity called The Pitch! This all day event was conducted by Badger Business Camps and lead by Steve Bench, founder of The Pitch!
During this event, each group of six students were charged with having to form a company, create a business plan, invent a product and then pitch their product in a presentation to the entire sixth grade student body. Fun was had by all involved, giving the students a chance to be their very own entrepreneur in middle school!!

Behavior Education Plan (BEP) Updates
|
|
-We have an "Off and Away" policy during the day for cell phones. Please remind your students to be off their phones during the day and focus on learning.
-It is against District policy for any videos or pictures to be taken on electronic devices without the permission of the school.
-Now that we have snow on the ground, please remind your students to not throw snow. It is a safety issue for students that comes with serious consequences.

Dress Code
With the weather warming up, I just wanted to do a quick review of Jefferson's dress code policy.
There is a close relationship between student attire and student attitudes toward school. For that reason, the district Student Conduct and Discipline Plan (#107) prohibits students from "dressing or grooming in a manner which disrupts teaching or learning." Please note the "particulars" as it relates to Jefferson students "dressing for success." These guidelines are similar to those in other of our middle schools.
General-Not Allowed
- Coats or jackets worn to class
- Bare feet
- Wallet chains or pant chains
- Sunglasses or "play glasses"
- House slippers
- Visible underwear
- Clothing that carry profane, obscene, gang-related or offensive slogans or pictures
- Hats, bandanas, hoods, hairnets, scarves, sweatbands, "do rags," etc. Headgear worn for religious reasons is allowed.
Tops-Not Allowed
- Muscle shirts
- Spaghetti straps, see-through mesh shirts, backless tops, halter tops, tube tops, tops that expose the stomach, and sleeveless shirts that expose the sides.
Bottoms-Not Allowed
- Short shorts (Shorts should go to the your fingertips when you arms are extended)
- Sagging pants-even if you have gym shorts underneath!
|
|
-We are finishing up our Spring Map Testing! Please encourage students to get plenty of rest
