N.E.W. Mental Health Connection
Family Services is a member of the new N.E.W. Mental Health Connection in the Fox Valley, a group of individuals and organizations working collaboratively to improve mental health services in Northeast Wisconsin. Primary goals of the group are to:
  • Strengthen 24/7 crisis response, bringing law enforcement, crisis services, emergency departments, and mental health providers together to get people to the right level of care at the time they need it.
  • Implement a "No Wrong Door" system, to ensure that individuals needing help do not get bounced around between agencies or, worse yet, fall through the cracks completely.
  • Support primary care providers, by developing training and support to assist them in diagnosing and treating mental illnesses.
  • Support school-based mental health, to strengthen mental health response systems in schools, support connections with service providers, minimize duplication of efforts, and secure adequate funding.
We are proud to be part of this collaboration, helping to build one of the best delivery systems in the nation and providing easy access to services when help is needed.

Keeping Kids Safe
Mom & Baby " Sarah", a young single mother, was thrilled to be invited to the Christmas in July give away at Parent Connection in Oshkosh. She needed clothes for her five month old son, Jaden, and could not afford to buy them. Our staff greeted her as they arrived and noticed that Jaden was in an infant car seat, but he was not strapped in. While Sarah sorted through the bins of donated clothing, our staff played with and talked to baby Jaden. When it was time for Sarah to leave, the staff asked if they could assist her in strapping Jaden safely into his car seat. At that point Sarah showed them that the straps on the car seat didn't work.

She knew it was a problem, but did not have the money to buy a new seat for her son. After discussing the situation, our staff were able to offer her a different car seat from our storage room. One of our staff members, with training on proper car seat installation, was then able to help install the car seat in Sarah's car and show her how to properly strap Jaden in.

Upon further investigation of the old seat, our staff discovered that the nylon straps had been cut and melted back together. If Jaden had ever been in that seat during a car crash, those straps very likely would have given out and he would have been ejected from the car. Sarah expressed a tearful appreciation to Parent Connection staff for their help and acknowledged that they may very well have saved her son's life.

Parent Connection is a parent education and early learning program that Encourages, Strengthens and Supports families throughout the Fox Cities and Oshkosh. Services include home visitation for first time parents, family wellness workshops, teen parent programs, dads programs, and more.
