Fantasy Football Update
The "Fantasy Doctor" Is In!

Let the "Fantasy Doctor" keep your team in shape throughout the fantasy football season. In this newsletter, you'll find important injury news and notes on some key fantasy players heading into Week 5.

Around the League Notes

Calvin not cruising: Star WR Johnson struggling with ankle

What happened: Calvin Johnson sustained an ankle injury against the Packers in Week 3 and was nearly a non-factor in Week 4 vs. the Jets.  After the game, it was leaked out that his knees may be more of the issue.

Player/team outlook: Johnson needs to have healthy legs to maintain his status as the league's premier wide receiver. The Lions need him on the field, even as a decoy, so he needs to get healthy.

Fantasy recommendation: The Fantasy Doctor already advised against starting Johnson this week. His status will have to be monitored on a weekly basis going forward and know that his time on the field may be limited on Sundays. He can't be replaced so you'll have to hope your backups can deliver if he can't go.

He's baaaack! Ben Tate set to return from knee injury

What happened: Tate sprained his right knee in the season opener and hasn't played since.

Player/team outlook: It's good news if he's back as the Browns need Tate to take over as the primary running back. He provides a big boost to Cleveland's offense if he can consistently stay on the field.

Fantasy recommendation: Tate makes for a high upside RB2 and possibly a lower-end RB1 for the remainder of the year, assuming he doesn't get injured again. His return lowers the value of both Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell.

Hammy issues linger: Cecil Shorts to wear street clothes in Week 5

What happened: Shorts missed the start of the season with a hamstring problem and aggravated it on Sunday in San Diego.

Player/team outlook: Unless Shorts gets needed rest now, he'll likely be a bust for the entire season. These hamstring issues can linger without the proper rest. His injury is a big blow for a struggling squad trying to develop a rookie QB in Blake Bortles.

Fantasy recommendation: Shorts had a chance to produce big with the Jaguars finding themselves behind late in many games. Now it's time to scan the waiver wire and grab the best available WR as a replacement.

Derek Carr gets parked: Raiders QB out with sprained MCL/high ankle sprain

What happened: The rookie quarterback went down after a third-quarter scramble in Sunday's game in London. He stayed on the field for one more play before coming out for good.

Player/team outlook: The Raiders have a much-needed bye this week, although this type of injury should keep Carr sidelined for well more than the week off. Oakland will turn to either Matt McGloin or Matt Schaub in Week 6.

Fantasy recommendation: If Carr was your starter, your team probably had big problems before he got hurt. He's only worth holding on to in very deep keeper/dynasty leagues.

Overtime

Some extra advice to stay in the game!

  • Very, very desperate for an RB this week? Take a chance on Carolina's unknown Darrin Reaves. It looks like he'll get the start.
  • Jamaal Charles turned into superman on Monday night with his performance. There's simply no way the Chiefs RB was dealing with a high ankle sprain. Keep his backup Knile Davis on your roster though, as he's a great play when Charles can't go.
  • Only the Dolphins and Raiders are off this week, making it easier than last week when it comes to lineup decisions.
