Fargo Physicians Stand for Measure 1

Fargo area physicians representing over 60 North Dakota physicians hosted a press conference today at Rosewood on Broadway offering a second opinion on Measure 1; noting their support of the Human Life Amendment. These physicians practice in multiple areas of medicine and care for patients from the beginning of life, until the time of their death. Most of these doctors are from North Dakota, trained in North Dakota, and have spent the greater part of their medical careers in North Dakota.

Dr. Patty Laquae led their supporting statement, "We care deeply about our patients and about what is good for North Dakota; we believe Measure 1 is good for North Dakota and represents the values of our state. Opponents to the measure have raised concerns this will have unintended consequences that will affect the physician-patient relationship, our ability to follow our patients wishes about end of life care, or the ability of fertility specialists to provide in-vitro fertilization services.  We have studied this measure in great detail, and if we had any concern that these things might happen, we would not support this measure." She continues, "We are convinced these concerns are completely without merit, and furthermore, we are troubled by how these concerns are being heavily promoted with large amounts of money from out of state Planned Parenthood organizations; a group that has a vital interest in promoting unlimited abortion on demand, but no interests in end-of-life-care or fertility treatment."

When asked about the statement regarding NDMA statement of opposition of Measure 1, Dr. Walter Johnson said, "Support or opposition of the Human Life Amendment was brought to the NDMA public policy committee at their annual meeting. It was discussed and no decision was made and set to remain neutral. How the decision was made to oppose Measure 1 is unclear as there was no vote from the committee nor a poll of the membership.

The remainder of their statement reads:

What is Measure 1?  Measure 1 is a proposed constitutional amendment that states "The inalienable right to life of every human being at any stage of development must be recognized and protected."  Why do we need such an amendment?  Outside proponents of unlimited abortion rights have targeted states like ours to try and overturn the commonsense laws related to abortion that have been passed with overwhelming approval by our state legislators.  These groups have chosen to do this by attempting to interpret the "liberty clause" in the state's constitution, to recognize an essentially unlimited right to abortion without restriction; laws such as parental notification of minors, licensing and credentialing of abortion providers within the state, and prevention of partial birth abortion. These are commonsense laws that the overwhelming majority of North Dakotans favor.  These outside proponents of unrestricted abortion, with the help of a single sympathetic judge, have successfully overturned one such law based on the interpretation of an overt right to abortion under any circumstance under the liberty clause of our ND constitution.  We believe the founders of our constitution would be appalled at such an interpretation.  As such, this measure would give clearer language in the constitution to legislators and judges, that the default interpretation of our laws is to protect life.  This would prevent a single judge from overturning our commonsense laws adopted by our legislators that regulate or restrict abortion.

Similar constitutional amendments have been passed in 2 other states, Missouri and Arkansas. Now, more than 20 years later, fertility clinics continue to operate without problems, and physicians continue to care for their patients through all stages of life without interference from the government in both of those states.

Dr. Patty Laquae concluded by saying. "Measure 1 will give clear guidance to our judges on how to interpret the laws passed by our legislators, and stop outside interest groups from recruiting activist judges to overturn our commonsense laws.  Please join us, and vote YES on Measure 1!"
