Each month, Special Services highlights a place, participant or program. This month, we're shining the light on:

Kara McGlashan

Farmington Hills Figure Skating Club Member

North Farmington High School Senior Kara McGlashan will be performing in her last Ice Show at the Ice Arena. She has been involved with Learn to Skate classes since she was four.

1. What type of performance will we see from you during the Ice Show?
KM:
I would consider it a lyrical or contemporary solo and I'll be skating to "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" by Elton John.

2. What is the best thing you are able to take away from Learn to Skate classes?
KM: Probably my coach, Kim Herbert. I met her through the Learn to Skate program when I first started out and I've been with her ever since. She's had the biggest influence on how I am as a skater today; without her constant support and encouragement to grow as a skater, I'm not sure where I would be.

3. Why do you think it's important for students your age to get involved with activities like these?
KM:
I think it's important because it teaches people how to interact with both younger and older kids that you can lend or receive advice from; and also to interact with adults that could possibly help you later on. I was able to get my job as a junior instructor/Learn to Skate helper because I knew, and was respected by, the director at the time. But beyond developing good communication skills, the memories and friends that I will leave with are irreplaceable. Looking back now, I can confidently say that it has been an amazing 14 years spent at the FHIA. I am so lucky to have met all of the incredible coaches, parents and skaters at the rink.

4. Do you plan on continuing skating after high school?
KM:
I will be attending Michigan State University next year to major in Hospitality Business and Advertising. I also plan to skate for the MSU Synchronized Skating Team.
