Here are just a few of the highlights from this one-of-a-kind offering:
Bordeaux!
CHATEAU TALBOT 1986, St. Julien/Bordeaux
$175 regular price
$145 special!
Save 17% 6 bottles available
Cellartracker average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 149 notes.
96 pts Wine Advocate: "A fabulous wine, and one of the two greatest Talbots of the last 50 years, this wine still has a very murky garnet/plum/purple color and a spectacular nose of sweet creme de cassis intermixed with freshly ground pepper, melted road tar, herbes de Provence, and beef blood. It is followed by an enormously concentrated wine of full body, layers of concentration and sweet tannin. The wine seems to be just hitting its plateau of maturity, where it should last for at least 10-15 more years. A prodigious Talbot. Anticipated maturity: Now-2020."
CHATEAU PAVIE 1982, St. Emilion/Bordeaux
$295 regular price
$250 special!
Save 15% 2 bottles available
Cellartracker average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 47 notes.
88 pts. Wine Advocate "This fully mature 1982 displays a weedy, herbaceous character interwoven with notions of earth, fruitcake, cherry jam, and spice box. Representative of the old style Pavies, it is moderately endowed, with ripe tannin, but not a great deal of concentration. It needs to be consumed over the next 2-4 years. Drink: 2009 - 2013"
CHATEAU DUCRU-BEAUCAILLOU 1982, St. Julien/Bordeaux
$440 regular price
$320 special!
Save 27% 8 bottles available
96 pts. Wine Advocate: "A subsequent tasting revealed one of the all-time great Ducrus, probably matched or eclipsed by several recent vintages (i.e., 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2008). The 1982 is still 5-8 years away from full maturity, but it exhibits a dense ruby/plum/garnet color to the rim as well as a sweet perfume of forest floor, spice box, cedar, and copious quantities of black fruits. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully pure with sweet tannins, this wine has aged more slowly than I initially expected. It is the finest Ducru Beaucaillou produced after the 1961 and before the 2003."
CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1986, Pauillac/Bordeaux
$1,250 regular price
$950 special!
Save 24% 7 bottles available

100 pts. Wine Advocate: "An enormously concentrated, massive Mouton-Rothschild, comparable in quality, but not style, to the 1982, 1959, and 1945, this impeccably made wine is still in its infancy. Interestingly, when I was in Bordeaux several years ago, I had this wine served to me blind from a magnum that had been opened and decanted 48 hours previously. Even then, it still tasted like a barrel sample! I suspect the 1986 Mouton-Rothschild requires a minimum of 15-20 more years of cellaring; it has the potential to last for 50-100 years! Given the outrageously high prices being fetched by so many of the great 1982s and 1990s (and lest I forget, the 1995 Bordeaux futures), it appears this wine might still be one of the "relative bargains" in the fine wine marketplace. I wonder how many readers will be in shape to drink it when it does finally reach full maturity? The tasting notes for this section are from two single blind tastings, one conducted in May, 1996, in California, and the other in June, 1996, in Baltimore."
CHATEAU MARGAUX 1982, Margaux/Bordeaux
$1,400 regular price
$1,300 special!
Save 7% 8 bottles available
98 pts. Wine Advocate: "Consistently scoring between 98-100, the superb 1982 Margaux may be slightly bigger, bolder, and more masculine than vintages produced over the last 15-20 years. Its dark plum/purple color is followed by notes of melted tar intermixed with sweet cassis and floral underpinnings. Very full-bodied and dense for a Chateau Margaux, with a slight rusticity to the tannins, it boasts blockbuster power, richness, and impressive aromatics. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. Drink: 2009 - 2049."
Burgundy!
DOMAINE LOUIS JADOT GEVREY CHAMBERTIN CLOS ST. JACQUES 1990, Burgundy
$275 regular price
$195 special!
Save 29% 11 bottles available
96 pts. Wine Advocate: "Jadot produced a profound Gevrey-Chambertin-Clos St.-Jacques. Andre Gagey, who, along with his son, Pierre-Henri, and their winemaker, Jacques Lardiere, participated in the tasting, announced he had put considerable quantities of this particular wine in his cellar to "help get him through his retirement." The color is a saturated dark ruby. The nose explodes from the glass, offering a melange of scents, including black-raspberries, toasty new oak, cloves, vanilla, and candy. In the mouth, there is astonishing richness, a thick, well-defined texture, and a flamboyant, moderately tannic finish that lasts well over a minute. The personality hallmarks of the 1990 vintage, the chewy, super-ripe character of the Pinot Noir and terrific richness, are beautifully displayed in this wine."
Rhone!
E. GUIGAL HERMITAGE 1985, Rhone
$120 regular price
$95 special!
Save 21% 9 bottles available
Cellartracker average 91.9 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 16 notes.
87 pts. Robert Parker: "This is a very good 1985, which Guigal believes resembles his 1982. Quite rich, very dark garnet-colored with some amber, it offers a bouquet of peppery cassis fruit. This full-bodied wine's low acidity resulted in a quick maturity curve, and the wine needs to be drunk up. Anticipated maturity: now-2000. Last tasted 8/96."
CHATEAU DE BEAUCASTEL CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE 1983, Rhone
$156 regular price
$129 special!
Save 17% 21 bottles available
90 pts. Wine Spectator: "Tough and closed in, but there's plenty going on in the glass. A full-bodied wine, with black cherry, charcoal and light earth aromas and tons of flavor. Has super-firm tannins and a tight structure. Needs much more time.--Châteauneuf-du-Pape retrospective. Best from 1995 through 1997."
GUIGAL COTE ROTIE "BRUNE ET BLONDE" 1979, Rhone
$175 regular price
$150 special!
Save 14% 8 bottles available
83 pts. Wine Spectator: "A big wine, but somewhat hollow. Chocolate and prune are the main flavors, firm but short. Drink now.--Guigal Côte-Rôtie vertical."
Australia!
PENFOLDS GRANGE HERMITAGE 1987, Australia
$450 regular price
$325 special!
Save 28% 11 bottles available
90 pts. Wine Advocate: "A light, elegant style of Grange made with a blend of 90% Shiraz and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has a deep ruby/purple color and a spicy, peppery nose with some new oak, black cherry, and blackberry flavors. The wine shows some dry tannin in the finish that may ultimately prove worrisome given the less-than-massive style of this vintage. Nevertheless, there is still a lot to like in this wine, which is very pure, ripe, and medium to full-bodied. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016."
90 pts. Wine Spectator: "Extemely spicy on the nose, with zingy berry and plum character coursing through the palate of typical Grange flavors. Chewy with tannins, but they're finely grained. Needs until 2005 or so.--Penfolds Grange vertical. 5,500 cases made."
Napa Cabernet!
DOMINUS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1985, Napa Valley
$195.00 regular price
$90 special!
Save 54% 10 bottles available
91 pts. Wine Advocate: "The 1985 Dominus stands out for its smoky, ripe cassis, earthy nose, sweet, full-bodied, concentrated flavors, and opulently long, chewy finish. It was the most forward, precocious example of this wine I have yet tasted. Most recent tastings have suggested the wine needed further aging. This bottling exhibited the plush, velvety texture that proprietor Christian Moueix achieves in top Pomerol vintages. The 1985 Dominus should continue to drink well for another 15-20 years. Drink: 1995 - 2015"
DOMINUS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1986, Napa Valley
$170 regular price
$110 special!
Save 35% 10 bottles available
93 pts. Wine Advocate: "I did not pick this out as Dominus in the blind tasting, largely because it came across as such a young, rich, blockbuster wine. One of the richest, densest, most concentrated offerings in the entire tasting, it also proved to be one of the best-balanced, with better integration of acidity and tannin than many 1986s exhibited. The color remains a deep, dark ruby, with purple hues. Dense, concentrated, and pure, with copious quantities of cassis fruit intermingled with earth, spice, and minerals, this large-scaled, concentrated wine appears to have aged at a glacial pace since I first tasted it. Accessible because of its well-integrated, low acidity, this wine should continue to evolve and drink well for another 15-20 years. Very impressive. Drink: 1996 - 2016."
DOMINUS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1989, Napa Valley
$155 regular price
$110 special! Save 29% 9 bottles available
92 pts. Wine Advocate: "The 1989 is undoubtedly the Cabernet Sauvignon of the vintage. The color is a dark ruby/purple and the nose offers up sweet, fragrant scents of black fruits, cedar, herbs, and spicy wood. In the mouth, there is extraordinary concentration, medium to full body, and an authoritatively rich, lingering finish. Terroirists will have a difficult time explaining why the wine tastes more like a Pomerol than Napa Cabernet. Interestingly, Moueix stated the key to his success in 1989 was to wait six to seven days after the rains had stopped before harvesting so the vines could shed their excess moisture. The 7,000 cases of this wine that were produced will be released in the fall of 1993."
BEAULIEU CABERNET SAUVIGNON "GEORGES DE LATOUR PRIVATE RESERVE 1978, Napa Valley MAGNUM (1.5 Liter)
$280 regular price
$189 special!
Save 33% 12 bottles available
MAGNUMS! 90 pts. Wine Advocate: "Over the years, my notes on the 1978 B.V. Private Reserve have been wildly inconsistent. In this tasting (February, 1995), the wine performed up to its highest standards, displaying fully mature aromas of roasted herbs, red and blackcurrants and cherries intertwined with caramel and spice notes. Dense, rich, and full-bodied, with a velvety texture and gobs of spicy oak, this high alcohol, lusty-styled Cabernet Sauvignon offers a compelling glass of delicious wine. Readers should be aware that I have tasted a number of bottles that are significantly less impressive, leading to the often shared observation from wine enthusiasts that B.V. stands for "Bottle Variation."
