Art Nouveau Chinese Three-Panel Screen

Center Panel Featuring a White Peacock

Art Nouveau Chinese three-panel screen with white peacock
Painting and gold leaf on silk in wood frame
Measures: 49 x 68 x 1.5 inches

Birds are generally thought to be a symbol of freedom.  They can walk on the earth and swim in the sea as humans do but they also have the ability to soar into the sky.  Birds are free to roam the earth and the sky.  Many cultures believe that they are a symbol of eternal life; the link between heaven and earth. The peacock is often thought to be a symbol of the sun.  It's round tail symbolizes the heavens and the markings or 'eyes' on the tail are the stars.

In China the peacock has also represented Wisdom and Enlightenment.

In popular culture, the beginning of Fellini's great film "Amarcord" features a surreal sequence of a peacock in flight through lightly falling snow.

Set of Six Italian (Lucca) Side Chairs, circa 1810-1820.

Neoclassical Carved Side Chairs

Set of Six* Italian (Lucca) Neoclassical Carved Side Chairs, circa 1810-1820.

These neoclassical side chairs have hand carved heads, each slightly different due to the hand made nature.  You may note the extreme similarity to the logo of Versace with the stoic face, flowing hair and crossing ribbons below the chin.

Although made 150 years before Gianni Versace founded his company in 1978, these chairs still echo the timeless elegance of the famous fashion line.

*Although only two of the chairs are pictured above, there are a total of SIX, additional photos can be provided upon request.

Mexican Colonial Arm Chair c. 1775-1810

Chippendale Style

Mexican Colonial Arm Chair c. 1775-1810, in the Chippendale style

This important chair was created within 50 years of Thomas Chippendale's historic publication of The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director and is surely one of the first examples of this style created in the New World.  The exquisite pierced back splat and ornately carved arms that terminate in scrolls are certainly influenced by Chippendale's designs.
