February 2016
1-866-936-GIVE (4483)
IT'S ALMOST SPRING!!!  And as you can see, we have a new look.

February is an interesting month - we are just starting to feel like spring is around the corner and the stores are reminding us that love is in the air... Nothing like a consumer-based wake-up call to tell your loved-ones that you love them.  I am not ashamed to admit that I too, will tap into the Hallmark Holiday of holidays - Valentine's Day, to suggest that there are ways of expressing love beyond the box of chocolates and flowers.

Here are some ideas for how you can spread love and you don't even have to be in love to do it!
  1. Spend a day volunteering at a soup kitchen or shelter
  2. Read to some kids at a school
  3. Connect with Big Brothers and Big Sisters about being a "BIG to a LITTLE"
  4. Donate blood
  5. Make soup for a shelter
  6. Make cards for our soldiers overseas
  7. Support a local, family owned restaurant by having your romantic dinner there
  8. Share your love for community by giving the gift of love through TheCardThat.Gives

This issue highlights all the ways we show our love and affection to each other. Philanthropy and volunteering is an easy way to express yourself and share how you care for others, whether they are family and friends or your extended community.

This month the social enterprise we are featuring is Madison 1212 a community owned restaurant in Inglewood, Calgary, Alberta scheduled to open in 2016 and our featured charity is the Water for Riley micro-foundation on myPlace2Give - funds directed to ACAD and SAIT .  Both of these examples highlight how we come together to break bread and connect with each other.

Another way that we can dive deeper into our personal relationships will be at The Family Philanthropy Retreat at the Banff Centre March 11 - 13th.  This inter-generational program is designed for families to move them along the path of strategic philanthropy and effective social capital management.  Experts in finance, family dynamics and philanthropy will spend the weekend exploring and designing customized giving plans for you and your family.  It is sure to bring you and your loved-ones closer together in a safe, fun, breath-taking environment!

Our guest article is by Sybil Verch of Raymond James in which she shares some tips on finance and relationships.  Raymond James is one of the many organizations that we work with supporting advisors and their clients in philanthropy planning management.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Exciting news to start the New Year. Alberta College of Art + Design students in the Object Design course rose to the challenge and submitted fabulous drinking fountain designs.

A   community focused and community funded restaurant in the inner-city neighbourhood of Inglewood, in Calgary, Alberta is the latest social business to launch in Calgary's growing social enterprise s ector.  It's mission is to be a beautiful space where people come together to create, enjoy, share and become inspired.
