President's Perspective
United Way of Central Maryland's President and CEO, Mark Furst, sheds light on United Way of Central Maryland's (UWCM's) grant-funding process...what we think of as a "competitive meritocracy" that directs funds where they are most needed.

Governor O'Malley Addresses United Way Leadership Donors
Nearly 300 Leadership Society members (donors who contribute $1,000 or more annually) and their guests came together on Wednesday morning to hear Governor Martin O'Malley speak as part of our Tocqueville Society "In Their Own Words" breakfast series, generously sponsored by DLA Piper and McCormick & Co.
The Governor spoke about increasing Maryland and America's economic competitiveness, concluding with an inspiring poem reminding us all what it means to be a community. One line in particular stood out: "I am a link in a chain, a bond in the connection between persons."

A Healthy Harvest for the Hungry
March 2 to 10 is the 26th Annual Harvest for the Hungry, a statewide food drive in Maryland made possible by a host of
partners, including Coldwell Banker, the United States Postal Service, WBAL-TV, The Baltimore Sun Media Group, Safeway, Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, local food banks and pantries...and for the first time, United Way of Central Maryland (led by our Healthy Food Ambassador, Molly Shattuck)! We are giving the food drive a healthy twist, encouraging people to donate healthy, non-perishable items from this list.

200 Casseroles...1,500 Snack Bags...1,000 PB&J Sandwiches
...That's how much food our Families Living United group made on January 28 to feed Baltimore's hungry! More than 125 volunteers of all ages brought ingredients "Stone Soup" style and worked together to assemble meals. We thank everyone who volunteered, as well as Molly Shattuck, Chair of Families Living United, and Our Daily Bread, who hosted us. |
Urbanite Partnership Launch
Each year, Urbanite poses a question to its readers, seeking solutions to a problem affecting our community. UWCM has been invited to partner in this year's Urbanite Project, which asks how can we make healthy food accessible to everyone in Baltimore?
We invite you to join us on March 6 at the Lyric to kick-off the Urbanite Project 2012. There will be a discussion forum open to the public from 5 - 6 p.m., followed by a private reception. RSVP to ashley.gorby@uwcm.org.
