TiAunnie Calhoun
Member Volunteer of the Year

TiAunnie first came to The Edge Connection in 2008. She had an idea, but the timing just wasn't right yet. In 2013, she came back with a great product and an amazing drive to get it into the market. She joined the Plan for Profit Class and was on her way.  Her diligent market research brought her to The Edge Connection's computer lab at least twice a week. Soon she was not only doing her own research, but helping others, including Edge Connection staff. She became an integral part of the team. She answered phones, helped with projects, made phone calls for events, and was willing to help out with whatever needed to be done. She has been an invaluable asset to our organization, and so, it is with much gratitude and joy that we celebrate her as The Edge Connection's Member Volunteer of the Year.

With new health insurance marketplaces open, the SBA and Small Business Majority are hosting free Affordable Care Act 101 weekly webinars so small business owners can learn the basics of the Affordable Care Act and how they can enroll in health insurance marketplaces.

How Young Entrepreneurs Can Make Time for Love

Young entrepreneur's thoughts may turn to love. And though many of us yearn for it, we often think we simply don't have time because we're so busy with our business.

Marc Randolph, co-founder of Netflix, explains the situation he experienced as an entrepreneur with six startups under his belt, "Starting a company requires a marriage-like commitment -- for better or worse, richer or poorer, sickness and health..."

In other words, you're stuck with your other loves: Your love of entrepreneurship, love of owning your own business, setting your own hours, making your dream a reality. Although the money is tight -- or often nonexistent -- and 18-hour days are the norm, your dream keeps you going. But the question is, for how long?

At some point, you may look up from your desk or your laptop and realize that somewhere in your future you want a life, and not one lived in solitude. What can you do to make that happen? You're an expert at business planning, so why not use some of those insights to find room for love in your life?

Here are seven steps that may help you make time for love:

Martin Luther King: His 'dream' is great business strategy.
Martin Luther King defined his dream and created a plan to reach it. Entrepreneurs who do the same may not achieve Dr. King's grand results, but they can achieve great success.
"I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama ... little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers."

Dr. King had a dream in 1963 - and while it took many years, eventually it came true. Today in Alabama and across the United States, boys and girls of all religions and races hold hands, play together, and are taught the perils of discrimination.

The reasons for King's success were simple. First, he defined his dream, and then, he created a plan for how his dream could be realized. This same strategy can be applied with great success to businesses.

13 Simple Ways Women In Business Can Make A Difference In 2014!

Women must take a special interest in supporting other women in order to help make gender equality in business a reality. Here are a few easy things to try in 2014 to not only support other women, but to support and better yourself as well. What would you add?

1. Invest. Ideally, invest in a female-led startup. Even if you start out with just $1,000.00, begin exploring how you can really support and get involved with ensuring that women are more successful as business leaders and entrepreneurs in 2014. Dave McClure of 500 startups wrote a great piece on this a few years ago, and I've never forgotten it. He was the spark for me to begin angel investing myself.

Premier Development Program for Woman-Owned Businesses

Classes begin in April of 2014 and occur monthly for 6 months.  Classes will be from 8:30am to 12:00pm at Georgia Power.

11 Reasons 2014 Will Be A Breakout Year For Women Entrepreneurs
While women in the upper echelons of corporate America are singing the same old  tune, "Still No Progress After Years of No Progress," female entrepreneurs have something to rejoice about.

The number of $10-million-plus women-owned firms increased by 57% - a growth rate nearly 50% more than $10-million-plus firms overall, according to Growing Under the Radar: An Exploration of the Achievement of Million-Dollar Women-Owned Firms.

While the number is still small -  nearly 20% of angels in 2012 invested in women-led businesses - the percentage grew more than 40% from the previous year, according to the Center of Venture Research, which studies early-stage equity financing for high-growth ventures. Even venture capitalists have increased their support of women-led companies. It's still paltry, but the percentage of VC deals going to women-led businesses was 13% in the first half of 2013. That's nearly a 20% jump over 2012, according to Pitchbook, a venture-capital research firm.
