February 1, 2018: Year 8; Edition 3

The NOVA Open staff is in high gear as we get ready for the registration launch in just 28 days on March 1, 2018. There are some very critical things our attendees should know:
  1. Two weeks ago, we released the booking link in our 1/15 newsletter - and, today, the block is 50% sold out a month before we launch registration.
  2. Anyone who was a SuperNOVA in 2015, 2016 or 2017 should be on the lookout for a splash newsletter on February 12.
  3. The February 15th newsletter, will provide attendees with a first look at the schedule of games, events and seminars being offered at NOVA Open 2018. As well as links to primers and recommendations on how to prepare for the March 1 launch.
We are all very excited to be planning another great tabletop wargaming convention for our attendees. If you're in the Northern Virginia, Maryland, DC area, consider participating in NOVA Open terrain builds - a great way to make support the convention, make new friends and connect with local events.
Mike Brandt
CONGRATULATIONS to ADAN TEJADA of Morgaga, CA, USA for winning Shadespire the Ultimate Collection!

Special thanks to all who participated in this raffle, which raised just shy of $1,000 for Doctors Without Borders.
Gamers purchased tickets in nine (9) countries: Australia, Canada, Croatia, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden, United Kingdom & the United States.
From within the U.S. there were eighteen (18) states represented: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah & Virginia.
At the NOVA Open last year Games Workshop announced the creation of Warhammer Heroes program. More than 12,000 nominations were submitted around the world, and a mere handful were selected. We are proud to announce Laurie Brandt and Devin Moreno, NOVA Open staff members, as two of the recipients!

Laurie Brandt is the Executive VP of the NOVA Open, and the Board of Directors President of the NOVA Open Charitable Foundation (NOCF). The Foundation, established in 2013 to raises funds and awareness for causes through the generosity of the global community of wargamers and hobbyists, notably supports Doctors Without Borders, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and Fisher House Foundation. Laurie works tirelessly during the year to organize the NOVA Open Tabletop Wargaming Convention, works with the NOCF Board of Directors to coordinate a global consortium of hobby artists to create charity miniatures for global online raffles, networks with vendors and sponsors, and manages convention and charitable activities at the NOVA Open itself. She is motivated by her love of family - which always includes the coworkers and friends who surround her. She became involved to support her son, Mike (NOVA Open CEO), who began the convention to raise funds in support of breast cancer research in honor of her survival. Together with NOVA Open's huge volunteer staff and the NOCF Board of Directors, she stays involved to continue the good work of both organizations. The NOVA Open is proud of her Warhammer Hero award, and hope you'll wish her a gentle (as she's far too humble about this) congrats if you see her in the halls of NOVA this year.

Devin Moreno runs the Lord of the Rings / Hobbit events at the NOVA Open each year. He puts the work in every day to promote this game, and to rally and inspire its hobbyists through a wide variety of activities. Devin runs a very popular LotR YouTube channel, an array of "during-the-year" events, culminating in an incredible LotR gaming weekend at the NOVA Open. The LotR terrain at NOVA Open, a byproduct of Devin's passion, is heralded by hobbyists and GW staffers as among the very best in the world for this game.  When you play LotR at the NOVA Open, you battle on picture perfect replicas of the many battle scenes from novels and films. It is one thing to game on aesthetically thematic scenery... but another altogether to duke it out for the championship amidst the tumbling pillars of Osgiliath or the shadowy halls of Moria. These tables make for a heavily-photographed spectacle at NOVA every year, even for non-LotR gamers and fans. Devin's love of LotR enriches the hobby and we're proud of his role as LotR lead at the NOVA Open each year, taking point on our Middle Earth events. Don't miss the opportunity to stop by and congratulate him on this award while ogling his amazing inventory of LotR game tables.
Last year, the NOVA Open showed leniency in some areas due to the release of 8th Edition only a couple months before the event. By the time we reach NOVA Open 2018, nearly every codex and all 8th Edition rules will be well-established. GW's next "big FAQ" will be in March, with the next not to occur until after NOVA '18. As a result, and in support of constantly improving the quality of the hobby, we will be enforcing stricter hobby standards going forward.

Of particular note are the following:
  1. If you wish to field Forge World units, you must use the appropriate Forge World models where available. If no models are produced for the unit you wish to use, you must clear any proposed alternative through customerservice@novaopen.com prior to the event.
  2. If you wish to use counts-as models for any part of your army, you must submit it for approval to customerservice@novaopen.com prior to the event.
  3. Simple children's toys, rubber toys, and similar items are not acceptable as counts-as substitutions for wargaming miniatures.
  4. All of your models must be fully painted beyond primer, to include the base (simply painting the base a single color does not suffice). All incomplete models will be removed from your army list for the duration of your event. If you are concerned that your particular painting style or desired aesthetic may risk accidentally violating this rule, seek approval ahead of time via customerservice@novaopen.com
  5. In all cases seeking approval, effort and "the rule of cool" both count. We will seek to work with you in achieving approval for any and all interesting hobby ideas. Our policies exist only to ensure an ever-improving minimum standard of hobby quality we'd like to see across the convention as a whole.

If you have any questions or concerns about your army, let us know! We seek to continuously improve both the fairness and balance of our tournament and event formats while advancing the aesthetic quality of the hobby. Please do your best to help us in this endeavor by putting in your best effort toward completing the figures you bring to the table this year!
How do I make sure I'm able to purchase a bag on Feb 15?  First, you need to have been a SuperNOVA in either 2015, 2016, or 2017; second, you need to make sure you have access to the novaopenstore.com user account you purchased the bag with. That's how we'll be tracking you. If you are unable to regain access to your account for any reason (*after* attempting account recovery on your own), please contact customerservice@novaopen.com . Once you've taken care of these needs, you'll be good to go.

We will remind you: On Monday, February 12 , all 2015-2017 SuperNOVAs will receive a splash newsletter from us regarding this opportunity. If you believe you were a designated SuperNOVA, and do not receive the splash, contact customer service immediately with your corrected email.

This special, exclusive, Early Bird SuperNOVA will be available only to 2015-2017 SuperNOVAs beginning at 8:00 PM US EST sharp on Thursday, February 15, 2018.

One of the most exciting parts of NOVA Open 2017 was the opportunity for attendees to play Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire , the company’s competitive miniatures game based in its Age of Sigmar setting. In the game, players use warbands of small units from the setting’s different factions and special ploy cards to complete objectives. Aside from picking a warband, players must build card decks of the ploy and objective cards, giving every player the opportunity to fine tune their warband’s fighting abilities and goals for winning the game. In order to learn more about the game, NOVA Open interviewed David Sanders, the game’s designer after completing a demo at NOVA Open 2017. Read below to learn more about the game’s development as well as his experience writing rules for Warhammer 40k 8 th Edition.
  1. A Convention Access Pass (CAP) is required to attend the NOVA Open. Single day passes are also available if one does not wish to attend the entire convention.
  2. CAPs and Day Passes are non-refundable, non-transferable items.
  3. The Early Bird pricing on the CAP is $40; the cost will go up to $50 at 11:59pm EST the night of July 1, 2018. Each Day Pass is $20.
  4. There are two upgrades available which require the purchase of a CAP: SuperNOVA and DwarfNOVA.  When you place an upgrade in your cart, a CAP will automatically be added and you will purchase both at checkout.
  5. The only people who will receive one of the NOVA Open's Premium Swag bags will be the "First 400" who purchase CAPs (and all 150 SuperNOVA upgrades). This is based on registration date alone.
  6. If a "First 400" cannot attend:  The swag bag is forfeited unless arrangements are made ahead of time with Marti Seraphin (customerservice.com) for a friend to pick it up. NOVA Open will not ship.

The SuperNOVA upgrade is the NOVA Open's answer to the Best Swag Bag Idea in tabletop wargaming. For past attendees, the SuperNOVA needs no introduction. If you've never seen or heard of a SuperNOVA, we think the most important piece of information we can give you is that these 150 bags sell out in under a minute! One of the main reasons for its success is NOVA Open's partnership with KR Multicase - since this "Swag Bag" is actually a CASE!

Click the below image to learn more about why you want to be hovering the keyboard at 8:00pm EST on Thursday, March 1, 2018.

The DwarfNOVA upgrade is for those who miss out on the SuperNOVA and the Premium Swag Bag. Like the SuperNOVA, the DwarfNOVA includes a convention T-shirt in your size, some great NOVA Open branded swag, and items donated by vendors and sponsors to bring its value up to over $150. Click on the Swag Guide below for more information.
  1. The NOVA Open store cart allows attendees to drop and add most events and seminars.
  2. Certain items cannot be dropped - for example, pre-sale purchases (mugs, shirts, etc.)
  3. Drop/Add is disabled on August 15, 2018

Seminars at NOVA Open 2018 are shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. Just like last year, the NOVA Open and instructors are working to bring you great hobby, display, and informative seminars. The NOVA Open strives to host an extensive range of seminars with award-winning instructors who will help attendees take their hobby skills to the next level. Whether you're a new hobbyist wanting to improve your painting or learn a new skill, or you’re an experienced display painter who wants to score higher at your next competition, the NOVA Open staff is working on a line-up of great seminars.

How can you find the seminars you want to attend? In 2017, based on feedback from our attendee survey, we added filters to the seminar page including con day, instructor name, seminar focus, type, and skill level. Descriptions have not yet been updated for 2018, and some seminars may have more than one term in a filter category (e.g. the focus of some seminars is both hobby and display because the skills can be used in either one), but we want to walk you through what to expect to see.

  • Seminar Focus describes the primary concentration of the seminar. This includes display painting, hobby painting, terrain, lighting, and special events (usually a lecture or panel).

  • Seminary Type describes if it is hands-on, demonstration, lecture, or panel.

  • Skill Level filters are beginner, intermediate, advanced, or all.

Receiving and reading the NOVA Open bi-weekly newsletters is the best way to stay informed and prepared.
Happy New Year!
Welcome to the 2018 NOVA Open Terrain Building Season

This year, we are focusing on taking our terrain to the next level. This plan starts with some of our older terrain. We spent 2017 removing a large amount of our old terrain and building new replacements. This year, we intend to fix a lot of wear and tear on existing pieces. This includes new paint wherever possible and modifications where necessary to bring terrain into line with current editions of our supported games. It is going to be a big job, but NOVA Open volunteers are always up to the task!

As a special project, we are doing some heavy repairs (and perhaps modifications) to our famous Star Destroyer - you know the one, it's about 11 feet long! We have used it for 3 events and it needs some attention. If you are interested in helping out on this project (or any of our projects this year), join us for our first of two February Build Sessions: February 10 th 10:00 AM at our workshop located at Telegraph Storage, Lorton VA.

Follow our progress at the Road to NOVA blog managed by our Minister of Terrain, Bob Likins.
