Thought for the Month
"Life is meaningless only if we allow it to be. Each of us has the power to give life meaning, to make our time and our bodies and our words into instruments of love and hope."

Greetings!
When I think about the journey we started with our son Evan almost five years ago, I would never have believed that in six months we would lose our vibrant 9 year old boy, that I could actually survive the worst loss a person could endure, and that I could then be blessed by the grace of God to start Evan's foundation and with the help of all of you we would make an incredible impact for people around the globe. In the last newsletter I reported 21 perfect matches that we "knew" about, many of our events are not trackable, but now in the course of three weeks, we have three young men donating. I knew in time that with the almost 15,000 donors we have placed on the registry, eventually we would see donor matches increasing as time went on. And that day is finally here. When we started this venture, I would put beg and plead for people to swab their cheek with us, but now, smarter and wiser, our goal is to "stop" anyone who is not committed to saving a life through bone marrow donation from swabbing. Our target audience is now young, healthy, diverse, available (meaning they will say "YES" if called upon) potential donors, and over 90% of our donor matches have been just that. On January 31st, Brian donated via peripheral blood stem cell collection in Washington DC, since he is part of the military, in the ROTC program of the U of Minnesota, where Evan was transplanted. He joined the registry at our annual Hope Kids Festival, made possible by the student athletes each year. Brian is very excited he had the privilege of being a donor and we hope to work with him at the U to add additional donors to the registry. Rob joined the registry in March of last year, at Valparaiso University while in nursing school. He was "startled" to get the call so soon after joining, as he knew the chances of matching a patient were slim. Rob donated earlier this week in Indiana via PBSC. Rob now works as a nurse in Chicago and knows that without individuals like himself sharing their vital resources, medical professionals cannot do their job!
Kyle Struthers, a family friend, swabbed his cheek a few years back. He will be donating via PBSC, as well, on February 21st. Mom Tara, my good friend also a nurse, will be giving Kyle his injections starting tomorrow. She texted me a picture yesterday of the medication she received via Fed Ex, telling me that the "lifesaving has begun". Looking forward to hearing Kyle's account of his donation.

Calling All College Students....
With our goal to add "young, healthy, diverse, available" potential donors to the DKMS database, the best place to find those individuals is on college campuses. But we need motivated college students to help us run those drives.
If you feel the cause and are willing to learn more about how you can be part of this lifesaving venture, please contact Gina. Be it a one time event or hosting marrow drives regularly on your campus, by adding just one donor to the registry, lives can be saved.
Krystle is desperately in need of a marrow match. With no match from her siblings, and mixed Asian and Hispanic heritage, finding a donor match will be daunting. Because college campuses are the most diverse locations with young, healthy individuals, our focus needs to be with this population. Please help Krystle and the 10,000 patients nationally who will rely on a stranger to provide them with the lifesaving cells by hosting a marrow registry in your community. Contact BAHBAD for more information.

UC Riverside "BAHBAD" Club
|
I got the call last fall from a young man who is planning to go into medical field, who found our site and felt the cause. Sang gathered a wonderful group of motivated students to be part of his board and now this Be A Hero Become A Donor Club on the UC Riverside campus is getting ready to host it's second drive next week. Their first event in January was done with no advertising, a sort of "soft" opening, and they recruited 84 young, healthy, diverse, available donors to the DKMS database. Now that they got their feet wet, they will promote all future drives and hope to add several hundred potential donors during the final two quarters of the year. "Like" them on FB

If I swabbed my cheek already.... If you have ever swabbed your check with Be The Match in the past, you do not need to swab again with DKMS.
As long as you have kept your contact information current and receive an email/letter annually, you are still in the system. If you don't feel like you have heard from them any time recently, please call 1-800-MARROW-2 to confirm this. If you find you are not on the national registry, please go to GetSwabbed.org to register and when asked "how did you find out about us", please click on "Be A Hero Become A Donor".

Are you participating in
Relay for Life in your community
Consider hosting a marrow registry at your campsite at your city's "Relay for Life". This is the perfect venue to educate, provide awareness, and then the opportunity for your community to join the marrow registry. I think is is important for people who are connected to "cancer" for one reason or another and are willing to raise money for the American Cancer Society, that they understand that without them sharing their vital resources in the form of blood, marrow, cord blood and organs/tissues, cancer patients will not have a fighting chance. Help this community take the next step and actively "save lives" by providing them to a location to swab their cheek and become a potential bone marrow donor.
Contact Gina for more info and to discuss getting approval to host marrow registry at your relay.

Be A Hero Become A Donor partners with DKMS, the world's largest bone marrow donor center....
The Be A Hero Become A Donor (BAHBAD) Foundation's mission is to educate, empower and provide opportunities for individuals to share their vital resources and give life. Our number one priority is to recruit quality bone marrow donors to the national registry, as well as encourage blood and cord blood donation, and the commitment to organ and tissue donation though Donate Life America. As well as fundraising for our efforts and ALD research.

The DKMS mission is to save lives by recruiting bone marrow donors for leukemia patients and others in need of lifesaving transplants. DKMS is the world's largest bone marrow donor center. Beginning in June of 2011, The Be A Hero Become A Donor Foundation became the West Coast Ambassador for DKMS by partnering to recruit new bone marrow donors. OUR STORIES COLLIDE: Like the Cousineau family's journey with Evan, DKMS America's COO, Katharina Harf's life changed forever when her mother, Mechtild, was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Sadly, Mechtild lost her battle when Katharina was only 14. Read more From tragedy to triumph...Recognizing the importance of finding suitable bone marrow donors for every patient in need, Katharina's father, Peter Harf, founded DKMS Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei gGmbH (meaning German Bone Marrow Donor Center in English) in Germany in 1991. Today, Katharina continues her father's lifesaving work in the U.S. Her personal goal in life is to help other leukemia patients so that no family has to endure the pain that her family suffered. OUR TEAMS COME TOGETHER: BAHBAD will help to organize and train volunteers at donor recruitment events, while DKMS will facilitate the tissue typing, donor registration and will make the typing data searchable on the national and worldwide registrues. This partnership will allow BAHBAD to concentrate its efforts on recruitment instead of having to focus on the tissue typing costs as they have in the past in order to add donors to the registry, although fundraising for both non-profits will continue to be critical to our causes.
